GENESIS 12 GENESIS 12 Abraham’s First Journey into Faith

1 Now the LORD had said to Abram: "Get out of your country, From your family And from your father's house, To a land that I will show you.

From your country = your countrymen From your family = your relatives From your father’s house = your immediate family

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. Gen 2:24

Ur

2 I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing.

THE THREE BLESSINGS PROMISED TO ABRAHAM IN GENESIS Personal “I will bless thee” 12:2 2. National “I will make of thee a great nation.” 12:2 3. Spiritual “In thee shall all the families of the world be blessed” 12:3

GOD’S PLAN UNFOLDING Adam and Eve God put them in a fruitful place Abraham and his descendants A land flowing with milk and honey

GOD’S PLAN UNFOLDING Adam and Eve Called them to be fruitful and multiply Abraham and his descendants Promised to make of him a great nation

GOD’S PLAN UNFOLDING Adam and Eve Made them rulers over creation Abraham and his descendants Promised (through David) an eternal kingship

2 I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing.

And they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves.” Genesis 11:4

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. Luke 3:1-3

2 I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing.

3 I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."

I will bless those who bless you, but the one who treats you with contempt I must curse.

4 So Abram departed as the LORD had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.

Did Abraham know where he was going? He went out, not knowing where he was going. Hebrews 11:8

5 Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan.

6 Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. And the Canaanites were then in the land.

7 Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your descendants I will give this land." And there he built an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him.

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. Romans 12:1

8 And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD.

THE THREE IMPORTANT THINGS ABRAHAM DID He pitched a tent He built an altar He called upon the name of the LORD

9 So Abram journeyed, going on still toward the South.

10 Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to dwell there, for the famine was severe in the land.

But the land which you cross over to possess is a land of hills and valleys, which drinks water from the rain of heaven, a land for which the LORD your God cares. Deut 11:11-12 For the land which you go to possess is not like the land of Egypt from which you have come, where you sowed your seed and watered it by foot, as a vegetable garden. Deut 11:10

11 And it came to pass, when he was close to entering Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, "Indeed I know that you are a woman of beautiful countenance. 12 "Therefore it will happen, when the Egyptians see you, that they will say,`This is his wife'; and they will kill me, but they will let you live.

“Egyptians women, according to both ancient and modern testimony, were generally ugly, and faded early.” Keil and Delitzsch

13 "Please say you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that I may live because of you."

14 So it was, when Abram came into Egypt, that the Egyptians saw the woman, that she was very beautiful. 15 The princes of Pharaoh also saw her and commended her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken to Pharaoh's house. 16 He treated Abram well for her sake. He had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male and female servants, female donkeys, and camels.

17 But the LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife. 18 And Pharaoh called Abram and said, "What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 "Why did you say,`She is my sister '? I might have taken her as my wife. Now therefore, here is your wife; take her and go your way."

20 So Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they sent him away, with his wife and all that he had.

PARALLELS BETWEEN ABRAHAM AND THE EXODUS Both Abraham and Israel went down to Egypt because of famine. Abraham (male) feared that he would be killed and Sarah (female) spared, while in Moses’ day all the male babies were killed and the females spared.

PARALLELS BETWEEN ABRAHAM AND THE EXODUS God sent plagues to deliver both Abraham and Israel. Abraham received many possessions from the Egyptians and Israel “spoiled” the Egyptians in the Exodus. Both Abraham and Israel subsequently went to the Negev where they spent much time.
