We Need a Government

Why do we need Government? Write your best paragraph. Include examples of why you think the way you do. After you write your paragraph… Make a list of everything you think the government does or should do.

Direct Democracy The people decide or vote on all new laws and policies directly. Examples – Ancient Athens – Switzerland – United States

Representative Democracy Elected officials, representing a group of people, decide on policy and laws. Example – Roman Republic – United States of America

Theocracy System in which priests rule in the name of a God or Gods. Examples – Vatican City – Islam – Tibet

Autocracy/Absolute Monarchy System in which supreme power is in the hands of one person. Example – Louis XIV of France – Great Britain – Prussia – Russia – Saudi Arabia

Constitutional Monarchy Monarch acts as the head of state within the guidelines of a constitution. Examples – United Kingdom – Thailand – Hawaii

Dictatorship/Facism Ruled by an individual (dictator) or a small group of people. Unifying a country under force. Super- Conservative. Example – Nazi Germany – Italy

Capitalism Economic system in which trade, industry, and the means of production, are controlled by private owners with the goal of make profits in a market economy. United States
