Secondary Principal ’ s Report April 14 th, 2014

Mission Statement The mission of the Pender Public School District is to provide quality educational opportunities in a safe, positive learning environment that motivates and challenges all students to become productive and responsible citizens.

Student Assemblies *NECC Jazz Band Performance Wed. April 16, 8:15 a.m. ~ PHS Alum Angie Dunn will be performing with the band!

Spring Activity Update Boys Golf – 14 boys out for golf – Participated in 1 triangular, 1 dual and 1 invite – Bob Rainer has been a huge help to Mr. Hoffman – Host Pender Invite on Saturday April 26 th Track – 36 out for track (13 boys/23 girls) – Stanton Meet - Boys 4 th, Girls 5 th – Hartington Meet - Boys 2 nd, Girls 2 nd – Homer Meet - Boys 10 th, Girls 5 th Baseball – 28 boys out for baseball – 11 from Pender – 8 from Bancroft-Rosalie – 9 from West Point Beemer – Current Record 4-2

NeSA Testing Nebraska State Accountability testing in full swing. Testing windows are as follows: NeSA – Writing Jan. 20-Feb. 7 - complete NeSA – ELDA Feb. 10- March 21 - complete NeSA – Reading, Math, Science March 24-May 9 – Currently completing these assessments

ACT comes to PPS ~ ACT was held in Pender on April 12 th ~ Mr. Nixon and Mr. Warren proctor the testing ~ 18 students taking the test - 14 from Pender/ 4 surrounding communities ~ We are also giving the ACT with accommodations for those students who qualify on an individual basis.

Senior Service Learning Was contacted by Shari Dorsey from Legacy Garden/Prairie Breeze about kids willing to volunteer their time to help with a spring pick up. Mr. Warren had just come back from professional development and wanted to start looking for community improvement activities as outlined in the civic participation portion of the 12 th grade social studies/government standards. Combined these two efforts into a service learning project that both benefited the students and the community. Was contacted by Bruce Smith and Shari Dorsey to let me know what a nice job Mr. Warren and the students had done.

Jack R. Snider Young Band Directors Award Mr. Greg Olsen of Nebraska City nominated Mr. Dregalla Sought out Rae Brown who was teaching his Masters Learning Community to help him with the nomination Rae came to me for some help in late November Letters of support from students, parents and administration were gathered Mr. Dregalla found out in early March that he received the award (and didn’t tell anyone) Gave up the formal awards presentation to be at girls state basketball with his students We found out today he received the award and would be presented to him this evening

G.O.O.S.E. G.O.O.S.E. stands for Get Out of School Early I cover 1 st or 8 th period for the receiving teacher/paraprofessional Can cover the period after lunch for coaches/sponsors who cannot come late or leave early Given as recognition for a job well done GOOSE recipient this month is Matt Dregalla Matt teaches elementary/secondary instrumental music Implemented a Jazz Band Constantly working to better his program Congratulations Matt!!

Teacher Evaluations 19 positions to evaluate 8 non-tenure teachers (2 evaluations) 11 tenure positions (1 evaluation) Several left to complete this month Evaluation does include observation of an entire 50 minute class period, feedback and a post-evaluation conference Walk-through evaluations are on-going

Health Career Academy 6 th year that we have participated in NECC Health Career Academy. Involved three classes: – Intro to Health Science Careers (Kari Athey) – Medical Terminology (Articulated Credit – Kari Athey) – CNA Licensure Course (Jacque Breitbarth) Mrs. Athey explores health careers with students at the Pender Community Hospital – Works closely with Sharon Heineman Recently she took students to Faith Regional in Norfolk for a similar job shadowing experience – Spoke with a panel of doctors/med students

Quiz Bowl Lost in first round of KTCH Radio Bowl in late January Placed in the middle of the pack at the East Husker Conference Competition March 31 st Placed 2 nd at Northeast Nebraska Quiz Bowl April 7 th held at NECC – 2 nd out of 40 teams – Lost to Wisner-Pilger by 5 points Members are: – Caleb Jasa – Corbin Lamplot – Treyvor Vice – Lily Lorenson

Class C All-State Band Held in Kearney, NE End of March 9 students who auditioned and were invited to participate Alyson Schilling (9 th ), Rebecca VonSeggern (12 th ), Kennedy Morgan (10 th ), Cierra Kirkland (9 th ), Emily Essmann (12 th ), Caleb Jasa (11 th ), Kody Wageman (11 th ), Josh Springer (10 th ), Vanessa VonSeggern(10 th )

State FFA News State FFA was held April 9-11 in Lincoln Kids performed and behaved very well Awards – 8 Students earning State FFA Degrees Shelby Anderson, Leigh Heese, Emily Essmann, Spencer Rutar, Mark Dunn, Drake Johnson, Chris Kai and Molly Burmester – 1 State FFA proficiency finalist : Shelby Anderson (12 th grade) - 2 nd Place – Agriscience - Kamryn Anderson (9 th grade) - 8 th Place – Natural Resources Team – 12 th Place – Chapter Display – 3 rd Place – Senior Parli Pro – received gold – 5 th Place – Junior Parli Pro (9 th grade team) – 2 nd Place – Junior Parli Pro (10 th grade team) – STATE CHAMPION

Team Carol for TeamMates Saturday, April 26 th 1 mile kids fun run/ 5K run or walk Omelets will be served at school after run/walk in conjunction with the volleyball tournament being held here Registration deadline is today! Proceeds will go to scholarship for Jeff/Carol Smith as well as Pender TeamMates Chapter
