Using the JST, other military transcripts and the ACENET Military tools to help veterans

 Andy Brucia  Senior Recruiter for Robert Half Technology  Previously: Prior Learning Assessment Specialist on a DOL grant at Bellevue College.  Program Manager for 2 years of a grant assisting veterans in transitioning to college and employment

 History of the JST  Walkthrough of a JST  Using a JST to assist a veteran with employment  Using ACENET Online tools  Using Military translators and crosswalks  Assisting Veterans in college in 2015

 My niece Rachel  18 when entering college  30 AP credits from her high school work accepted at her college

 “Sarah”  30 year old Army veteran  10 years military service  Worked as an IT specialist for 5 of the 10 years  Received 3 college credits (3 phys ed credits for boot camp)

 Record of military training  Record of military education  Credit recommendation tool for veterans pursuing college/additional training

 Combined Army, Navy and Coast Guard military branches into single transcript in 2013  Earlier and other branch transcripts provide similar info  Joint Transcript allows veterans and others to learn a single system and tool

 A JST will include training records for multiple military occupations in a single transcript  Detailed description of each training provided  ACE credit recommendations  Information to access more detailed info about each training using ACE online tools

 Training is often combined with credit recommendations for colleges  Other classroom training and standardized testing is included  Let’s take a brief look

 Question for the veterans in the room: Does your military transcript fully describe you as a professional?

 Transcripts lists training only  This was their training, but what did the veteran DO?  What was their actual work?  See/Do/Teach model  Did the person manage staff? Projects? Budgets?

 In college, a person might receive training, then…..  In the military, training is preparation for future work.

 Often veterans who separated before 2013 have an Army, Navy or Coast Guard transcript  SMART Transcripts  AARTS Transcripts

 The Veteran must have a CAC account set up 

 ACENET Occupation Guide ACENET Occupation Guide  ACENET Course Guide ACENET Course Guide  Short Video-

 Pull out your Navy sample JST  room/Documents/Navy-JST-Sample.pdf room/Documents/Navy-JST-Sample.pdf

 Tables 1: Evaluate a JST  Let’s say this is the transcript of a veteran you are working with, and he likes what he did in the service.  What career would you guide him toward?  What experience might be valuable on a resume?  What training from service would you include on the resume?  What other skills do you see that might help him in his career search?  15 minutes

 Tables 2: Evaluate a JST  Let’s say this is a transcript of a veteran who does NOT want to do what they did in the service.  What is valuable in his transcript for other careers? List a few.  What is valuable in his transcript for many careers?  What might you ask to try to get career direction for this vet?  15 Minutes

 What did you find?  Questions and Ideas:  A note about certifications:

 What did you find?  Questions and Ideas:  Transferable skills

 What else?  How else can we as counselors or advisors use this information and experience to service veterans we are working with?  A Starting Point

 Veterans often don’t have their Joint Service Transcript or know how to access it  ACENET Military pages list thousands of military Occupations and Courses  Start with military occupation- Courses often listed in Occupation page  Remember: Veterans often have multiple military occupations

 Using ACENET Occupation Guide  Looking Up an Occupation  ACENET Occupation Guide ACENET Occupation Guide  “Corpsman”

 “25 Bravo”  INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST  Pull out your packets

 Walkthrough of the Occupation  Different Levels of Occupation  Different Levels of Training  Credit Recommendations

 Tables 1: Evaluate a JST  Let’s say this is a transcript of a veteran who does NOT want to do what they did in the service.  What is valuable in his transcript for other careers? List a few.  What is valuable in his transcript for many careers?  What might you ask to try to get career direction for this vet?  15 Minutes

 What did you find?  Questions and Ideas:  Certifications

 What did you find?  Questions and Ideas:  Transferable skills

 What else?

 Break- 15 minutes

 What is a Military Crosswalk?  How can I use it to assist veterans?  

 Pros  Easy tool to use to find similar civilian occupations  Some have civilian income and sector information  Some have links to actual jobs

 Cons  Only shows similar civilian path- not transferable skills  Jobs listed often don’t match training

 Earlier training  New rules for veterans receiving credit for military training  More college credit for training

 #1-Colleges obtain military education transcripts for all military veterans seeking to use VA Education benefits  #2- Colleges evaluate all military education transcripts received  #3- Colleges accept the Joint Service Transcript as an official education transcript.

 #4- Credit recommendations from official military transcripts are identified and accepted when meeting course criteria.  #5- Military credit recommendations that match course offerings are identified and tracked  #6- A list of matching courses and military training is created.

 #7- Colleges create transparent policies that explicitly detail military credit acceptance  #8- Colleges provide a copy of this policy to all veterans exploring attending the school.

 #9- ACE credits must be used if possible  #10- All school must submit their policy to the State PLA workgroup by year’s end

 Evaluating the JST  Writing a Military Credit Policy  Letting Veterans Know  Creating a List of Courses that Match

 More credit= less time/cost to degree  Changes the landscape as far as career assistance  College need to disclose their policies toward credit acceptance

 Credit recommendations for  25B30  25B40  25B50  So if, under these new rules, ALL the credit on this sheet were accepted:

 How much money would a 25B30 save, if the per credit price at a college were $ per credit?

 Question: Is he seriously asking us to do math on a Friday afternoon?  Answer: Yes

 How much money would a veteran save who served as a 25 Bravo -30, if the per credit price at a college were $ per credit?  Answer: $

 How much time would a veteran who served as a 25Bravo-50 save, if he/she planned to take 15 credits per quarter?

 How much time would a 25B50 save, if he/she planned to take 15 credits per quarter and not attend in summer?  Answer: 3 quarters or one year

 New rules and law set to begin December 31 st  What is accepted won’t change overnight.  Veterans can be better college shoppers

 Thanks to each of you for creating a more veteran-friendly campus!  Thanks to Peter Schmidt, Samantha Powers and the Veterans Training Support Center for making this workshop possible.  Stay and collaborate if time allows!
