Every person at table has ACE question answered=10 points Every person at table has T-chart completed=10 points Every person has a question created=10 points (Put questions in bin at center of table for group discussion) Every person is participating in group discussion table gets 10 points For class discussion choose best question from table, each time your question stumps a person you get 5 points Each time you answer a question correctly you get 5 points for your team Each time you use a discussion frame and continue discussion/respond to person's answer you get 5 points

Creating Questions for Group and Class Discussion Thinks to consider for creating questions Use question guide to help create questions (on desk) Think about the topic you are reading about, how are the documents similar? How are they different? What questions can we create for the document that our partner can answer for us based on the document? What is something that is not clear to you? What do you need explained further? Think about the people involved, think about the countries involved, what future events may occur as a result of the event you read about? What vocabulary words are used that you are unfamiliar with?

Reporting of the U.S.S. Maine Explosion What conclusions can you draw as you are speaking with your group as well as the rest of the class? This reporting has a special term. This is known as…

Yellow Journalism Journalism that exploits, distorts, or exaggerates the news to create sensations and attract readers. Journalists used biasness to sell newspapers, this helped fuel the Spanish /American War.

Whole Class Discussion Who do you feel is responsible for the Spanish American War? How is one’s perception of world events impacted by yellow journalism? Analyze this quote “ You furnish the pictures and I will furnish the War” -William Randolph Hearst What does Hearst mean by this?

Summary/Homework Question Summary Question How do these examples of yellow journalism that we have read today lead to the Spanish American War? Homework Question How can ones perception of world events be impacted by yellow journalism?

Learning Target: I can create a newspaper article using yellow journalism to persuade an audience on whether or not the U.S. should go to war with Spain. Do Now: Analyze this quote “ You furnish the pictures and I will furnish the War” -William Randolph Hearst What does he mean by this?

Spain and the U.S. At one point, Spain controlled most of the Americas, including land that became part of the United States. By the end of the 19 th century, Spain lost most of their land but still had control over Cuba and Puerto Rico. The Cubans started to revolt against Spanish Rule. In competition with one another, two newspapers The World and the New York Journal printed exaggerated stories about Spanish Cruelty in Cuba to attract readers.

How did the U.S. get involved? President McKinley sent the U.S.S. Maine to Cuba to stop riots breaking out. The following month the Maine exploded in the harbor, killing 260 soldiers. U.S. felt Spain was behind it, U.S. demanded Cuba’s independence, Spain did not respond, and the war began.

Spanish American War Spain vs. America U.S. wanted to help Spain’s colonies receive its freedom from Spain. (Cuba), Cuba and Spain fighting, Cuba wants independence from Spain. Why get involved if you are the U.S.? U.S. traded with Cuba, if Cuba was at war it would disrupt the business between America/Cuba U.S. did not want war but did not want Spain to mistreat Cuba.

Activity: In groups, you will write a newspaper article using yellow journalism techniques, with the aim of convincing readers of the need for America to go to war or not go to war with Spain. You may also use your textbook as a source The article must have the following elements: a headline that captures the reader’s attention a byline (The byline on a newspaper or magazine article gives the name, and often the position, of the writer of the article); a graphic to illustrate the article a caption for the graphic that adequately describes the action; a lead paragraph; two (2) informational paragraphs that have details, facts, and figures; and a concluding paragraph (TOTAL- 4 paragraphs)

Newspaper Article Rubric The newspaper article will be graded on the following…

Group Roles Group Leader Cover and Artwork Scribe/ Typing Proofreader Time Management Research Specialist
