Thomas Vo Coursework Compliance
What does coursework compliance mean? It affects the way Financial Aid is awarded. Financial Aid will pay for classes within the program but not for any pre-requisites, or other courses, not specifically listed as part of a program of study.
This federally mandated instruction is designed to help students: Graduate as early as possible Maximize their financial aid eligibility Ensure they will be eligible for federal student aid for 4-year and transfer programs Reduce student debt and payment obligations
Federal Regulations A person must be enrolled as a degree seeking student in an eligible program to receive FSA funds. 1.A degree seeking student is someone who is enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an eligible institution for the purpose of obtaining a degree or certificate offered by the school. 2.If the student is merely allowed to take some courses before being officially admitted to the program, he/she is not considered a regular student and is not eligible until he/she is officially admitted.
Effect on Federal Student Aid If a student is enrolled in courses that do not count toward his/her degree, certificate, or other recognized credential, they cannot be used to determine enrollment status unless they are eligible remedial courses. This means you cannot award the student aid for classes that do not count toward his/her degree, certificate, or other recognized credential.
Exceptions: Remedial Coursework Remedial coursework prepares a student for study at the postsecondary level (as opposed to preparatory coursework, which prepares a student for a given program.) If the student is admitted into an eligible program and takes remedial coursework within that program, he/she can be considered a regular student, even if he/she is taking all remedial courses before taking any regular courses. You may count up to one academic year’s worth of these courses in his/her enrollment status for federal aid. (30 semester hours). Department of Education considers EAP courses as remedial and as such, up to 30 credit hours are eligible for federal student aid, provided student is entered in degree program.
In the news……… SJR State to pay back $675K in federal aid 3 months ago | 614 views | 0 | 1 | | St. Johns River State College officials expect to pay back about $675,000 in federal student aid after a state audit revealed students were using federal aid to pay for classes that were not required for their programs. According to Daniel Barkowitz, dean of enrollment management at St. Johns River State College, federal regulations require students to pay only for courses required for their program with federal student aid money. Barkowitz said the most common sources of student aid at St. Johns River State College are Pell grants and federal direct student loans. “What you have here are students who are typically earning their (associate degree in arts or sciences), and they run out of electives,” St. Johns River State College president Joe Pickens said. “So they take courses that are going to be beneficial to (their bachelor’s degree), but are outside of the courses required for their program here.” While a state audit is conducted at the school each year, Pickens said, the academic year was the first to reveal concerns for student aid overpayment. Three of the 25 financial aid recipients randomly selected for the audit used federal student aid money to take courses outside of their program of study. The school was then asked to conduct a “self-report” for all of the federal aid recipients, which revealed about 600 of the 6,000 recipients used federal money for classes outside of their program.
