Before there was this, this, or this…

There was this, and this.

Pueblo lived in 16 towns along the Rio Grande River of New Mexico and practiced farming. They planted such crops as corn, beans and squash), Rio Grande

The Pueblos used the natural resources in this area to get what they needed to live. You will learn how they used the resources for homes, food, clothes, and tools and weapons. Click on the buttons to learn more about how they used these resources. 21

The land they lived consisted of high flatlands. The region had hot days, cold nights and little rainfall. Click on the buttons to learn more about how they used these resources. 12 The desert provided adobe for homes. It also provided wildlife for food and materials for making clothing and tools.

Since there was little rainfall the pueblos had to learn how to adapt their climate. Click on the buttons to learn more about how they used these resources. 12 The Pueblos had to irrigate their crops from nearby streams. They did this because there was very little rainfall.

You will learn about Pueblo homes and how they were built.

The Pueblos lived in homes called a Pueblo. Say the word, Pueblo. Point to each part of the word as you say it. Where did the Pueblos live? Pueblo

Their homes were built with mud, sticks and stones. They looked like big apartment buildings. The Pueblo is made entirely of adobe - - earth mixed with water and straw, then either poured into forms or made into sun-dried bricks 213 Materials For Building The bricks were dried in the sun

The Pueblo. 213 A Pueblo has a flat roof and is built next to or on top of it's neighbor. Families slept on rugs or animal skins. The word "pueblo" is not a native word. It means town in spanish. "Pueblo" is used for both the houses and the people who live in them.

Pueblo 213 Many Pueblos had hundreds of people living in them. Some Pueblos were 40 or 50 feet high Click on the blinking light to look inside a pueblo

Building A Pueblo Pueblos are built several ways. One way is to use rocks to build a wall and cover the rocks with a plaster of mud on the outside. Adobe is a type of brick made from straw and mud, that was used to cover the rocks Used with permission of Tara Pringle/Nativetech.org 123

The Pueblos would use a ladder to get inside their home. In time of danger they would pull up their ladder so no enemy could get inside. Inside a Pueblo home. They would use animals skins and handmade rugs to sleep on. Each room of the pueblo usually went to one Pueblo family.

The children would walk the fields every day and pick insects off the plants by hand and would pull up weeds. 213 Click on the sun to see more on farming.

Corn was the most important crop for the Pueblo people. They ground it into corn meal and baked it in ovens like this one in a pueblo. Corn was dried and stored for times of drought when there was no rain The pueblo people made pottery to store the dried food Click on the sun to learn more about cooking

Cooking A horno is a kind of oven used by Pueblo Indians to cook bread and tortillas in. They used the roof of their pueblo like a porch.

They also grew gourds that could be dried out and used as containers. The Pueblos also grew cotton that they used to make cloth.
