Economic Empowerment Why are women overrepresented among the worlds poor? Laws limiting access to finance, land etc. Lack of access to education, health-care, etc. Violence, underage marriages Social norms, gender roles and stereotypes Less time for work Women represent 70% of the world's poor In most countries, women’s wages represent between 70 & 90 per cent of men’s Why do something about it? Establish more stable societies and improve quality of life in all communities Build strong economies. Good for business How? Normative. Internationally-agreed goals for development and human rights Operational. Business skill courses and microcredit loans

Leadership and Political Participation Support adoption and implementation of constitutional reforms, including temporary special measures Promote gender-responsive electoral management Training for women political candidates to help build their capacities, and offer civic education and sensitization campaigns on gender equality.

Ending Violence Against Women Advocate for ending VAW, increase awareness of the causes and consequences of violence. Promote the need for changing norms and behavior of men and boys. Support expanding access to quality multi-sectoral responses for survivors covering safety, shelter, health, justice and other essential services. Policy guidance to step up investments in prevention. Support UN member states in developing national action plans to prevent and address VAW.

Peace and Security Support implementation of UN Security Council Resolution family of res. Support stronger incorporation of gender equality commitments in conflict response and peace agreements. Promote increased numbers of women peace mediators. Promote gender-responsive Truth and Reconciliation Commissions. Engender humanitarian responses.
