Electrical safety campaign “Stay Clear: Don’t Lose Games with Electricity”

THE PURPOSE OF THE ELECTRICAL SAFETY CAMPAIGN To educate children about safe electricity use. To establish an emotional barrier : dont’t even try playing with electricity! To reduce the extent of electric shock injuries, avoiding further accidents in the long term. Target audience – children and youths up to the age of 18. Time – last school year, the prime selected timing for the campaign was spring

Why did we start the campaign?

Electric shock injuries involving children

WE WANT TO PROTECT CHILDREN FROM DANGEROUS SITUATIONS Climbing to the transmission line pole (10 years, place –Salaspils, 15 years, Ventspils region) Climbing to the cherry tree, whose branches was hanging on the power transmission line (15 years, place -Grobina) Put the nail in the electricity socket (2 years, place - Riga; 3 years, place- Jelgava) Put the fingers in the electricity socket (3 years, place - Lielvarde) Touching damaged microwave oven (2 years, Daugavpils) Touching with the hand naked wires at the apartment (6 years, place -Kraslava; 1 year Riga; 12 years - Daugavpils) Removing a damaged phone charger from the wall socket, charger broke down (13 year, place - Stopini)

Our strategy to reach children We involve our employees - during the previous school year, 96 of our employees visited a total of 210 educational institutions in Latvia and educated more than 15 thousand children on electrical safety.

Interactive game «Be smarter than electricity! Identifying 10 dangerous situations to encourage proper decision – making in children and adolescents users followed the electrical safety game on the 1st day, on the 3rd day, by the end of the campaign.

A poster contest titled Electrical safety and safe electricity use everyday – 1488 electrical safety posters were submitted for the topical contest, with 143 approved works. Winner in age group 15-18Winner in age group Winner in age group 5-9

Throughout the year we participated in various safety events and camps – Children’s World 2014“Who’s there? It’s me!” in Ķīpsala (4 – 6 April), Adventure Summer 2014 safety festival (17 May), Book Fair in Jelgava and Ozolnieki municipality (29 August), 15 th Riga City Children’s Festival (6 September), and Valka City Festival (13 September). Children were educated all summer long at 8 summer camps, including the Latvian Children’s Fund camps for children with special needs. About 350 minors attended lectures on electrical safety at summer camps.

We invite the society to be responsible Every year children in age 2 to 12 years suffer from serious electric shock injuries when they put an objects into the electricity socket. Respecting artistic freedom and creative minds, we invite the society to be responsible creating and displaying public available content for all age groups which shows life- threatening activities or indirectly inducements to it.

Results The main indicator of the campaign`s success is reduction in electric shock injuries involving children and youths

The campaign indirectly educates parents and teachers too. The number of children taught - 96 of our staff visited 210 educational institutions in Latvia last school year, speaking to more than 15 thousand children. Interest in the electrical safety campaign was confirmed by the number of poster contest submissions (1488, with 143 approved for participation). We continue to increase electrical safety awareness via the draugiem.lv portal, where it has nearly 51 thousand followers. The company also launches electrical safety campaign for adults. Results
