Peter Woodall Sports Award 2015 Living Our Lives 1

We all want people with learning disabilities to have the chance to get involved in sports and activities in Sheffield, just like everyone else. This group started a new sports award in 2013 in memory of Peter Woodall. What is the Peter Woodall Sports Award? 2

Who was Peter Woodall? Peter Woodall was our friend and a great sportsman whose life and personality inspired us. He sadly died in The board wanted to do something to remember him and to inspire others to enjoy sports and activities. 3

Who is the award for? The award is for a person who is really sporty, active and inspires others despite the barriers they face It could be someone who is in a football team, enters races or competitions. We will ask everyone linked to the Partnership Board to vote A special panel of people will choose a winner 4

Sport helps us stay fit, healthy and active. It also helps us meet new friends. We want people with learning disabilities to feel Sheffield is a city where they can follow their sporting dreams and reach their potential. So, how do we find a winner? We want nominations from you, family carers, support providers and everyone connected with the Learning Disabilities Partnership in Sheffield. Anyone could nominate a person with a learning disability for the award. Nominees should show they are:  Determined  Enthusiastic  Inspiring  Have overcome barriers  Have achieved something amazing 5

Last year’s winner... Alexander Thompson won because he is passionate about sport as an athlete, competitor and supporter. He is a swimmer, plays basketball and ten pin bowling. He has won medals at the Special Olympics. He volunteers at Burton Street and at Seven Hills School, where he helps run a basketball club. He was a volunteer at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. He also volunteered to become a Special Olympics School Ambassador in This year’s winner might not do as much as Alexander, but will be equally deserving because of what they have done. 6

What next? We want you to choose someone and nominate them for the award. A group of people will read the nominations and decide who should win. We need you to tell us who you think should win by Friday October 30. We will tell you who the winner is at the Learning Disabilities Partnership Board meeting on Monday 23 November. GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE NOMINEES! 7
