POLYGON A closed, flat shape made of three or more straight line segments. A B C D E FG H I

QUICK REVIEW WHY AREN’T THESE SHAPES POLYGONS?

THE ARCHITECTURE OF A POLYGON line segments: the sides of a polygon vertex: two sides meet to form an angle.

WHEN LINES OR SEGMENTS INTERSECT, THEY FORM ANGLES. An angle is an opening between line segments.

WE HAVE DIFFERENT NAMES FOR ANGLES DEPENDING ON HOW FAR THEY OPEN. Acute angle: less than a right angle (< 90°) Right angle: like a square corner (= 90°) Obtuse angle: opening is more than a right angle (> 90°) Straight angle: forms a straight line (= 180°)

POLYGON “SORT” You will each receive a card. Go up to a classmate and answer your question; make sure you give an explanation. Let your classmate tell you the answer to his/her card. Then switch cards. Find a new classmate and begin the process all over again. See if you can get through all 12 cards.

BELL RINGER Talk over the answers with your partner. NO WRITING!! 1.What does congruent mean? 2.What does non-congruent mean? 3.What is another way (besides non-congruent) to say two shapes are the same shape but not the same size? 4.What are three characteristics of polygons? 5.Acute angles are… 6.Right angles are… 7.Obtuse angles are… 8.Straight angles are…
