Chapter 9 Forest Biomes 9.1 Coniferous Forests The summers are warm and the winters are long, cold and dry. Coniferous----cone-bearing Conifers bear cones and long, thin leaves or needles which help the trees conserve water. Conifers loose and replace their leaves slowly throughout the year. Ex. Pine, hemlock, fir, spruce, and cedar. Animals----mice, squirrels, moose, elk, beaver.

– 9.2 Deciduous Forests Deciduous-loose their leaves When? Growing season lasts 6 months producing and storing large amounts of food. In autumn the tree sheds its leaves and becomes dormant. Photosynthesis stops and the tree makes no more food. In the spring the tree grows new leaves. Ex. Maple Oak, beech, ash, hickory and birch. – 3 layers of the forest » Canopy » Understory » Humus
– 9.3 Rain Forests Constant warmth and abundant rain. The most diverse biome on Earth. Available soil nutrients are in the top of the soil. Trees have buttresses for support because roots do not support well. Diversity of rainforest plants and a wide diversity of habitats. Rain forests are being destroyed because humans need space and wood.
