What is a Biome a large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat

Taiga The taiga biome is one that has very long and cold winters. Taiga biome makes up 29% of the world’s forest cover. It is the largest one in the world. The quality of the soil found in the taiga biome is very poor.

Taiga Animals Mooses, lynx, bears, wolverines, foxes, squirrels. Taiga Vegetation Coniferous, pines, oak, maple and elm trees.

Artic

Description The arctic tundra occupies earth's Northern hemisphere Tundra, the "ice desert", "frozen prairie", the cold plains of the Far North get their name from the Finnish word "tunturia", which means treeless land. The tundra biome is the coldest of all terrestrial eco- systems, and also the most chaotic. Still, the tundra is host to a surprising number of plants and animals, and represents a fascinating testament to nature's adaptability, and cruel beauty.

Animals of the Arctic

Vegetation of the Arctic In the Arctic, growing conditions for vegetation are very varied. In the southern reaches of the Arctic, plant communities can be vigorous, with small trees and stands of low growing shrubs. The further north one travels, the shorter and more sparse the ground cover becomes until in the high arctic, which is a true desert, the plants are scattered across rocky ground and the most numerous plants are the lichens. Here the carpets of flowers are only found below bird cliffs or other areas of high fertility. plant communities can be vigorous, with small trees and stands of low growing shrubs. Alpine Tundra

Description Cold, snowy, windy. Alpine biomes are found in the mountain regions all around the world. They are usually at an altitude of about 10,000 feet or more. Because the severe climate of the Alpine biome, plants and animals have developed adaptations to those conditions. There are only about 200 species of Alpine plants. At high altitudes there is very little CO2, which plants need to carry on photosynthesis. Alpine animals have to deal with two types of problems: the cold and too much high UV wavelengths.

Vegetation of the Alps

Animals of the Alps

Temperate Deciduous Forest

Temperate deciduous forests are most notable because they go through four seasons. Leaves change color in autumn, fall off in the winter, and grow back in the spring; this adaptation allows plants to survive cold winters. Eastern United States, Canada, Europe, China, and Japan

Animals of the Deciduous Forest American Bald Eagle American Black Bear Coyote Duckbill Platypus Eastern Chipmunk European Red Squirrel Fat Dormouse Least Weasel White-tailed Deer

Vegetation of the Deciduous Forest American Beech Carpet Moss Common Lime Guelder Rose Lady Fern Northern Arrowwood Pecan Shagbark Hickory Tawny Milksap Mushroom White Birch White Oak

Grasslands

Vegetation of Grassland Grasslands are areas where the vegetation is dominated by grassesvegetation is dominated by grasses

Grasslands Grassland biomes are unaltered areas of land where grass is the dominant plant life, as opposed to other terrestrial biomes where trees occupy most of the land surface. Grassland are found around the globe and have served as grazing areas for a large number of animals, and have been exploited as farming grounds or plantations by humans.

Desert

Deserts Deserts cover about one fifth of the Earth's land surface. Most Hot and Dry Deserts are near the Tropic of Cancer or the Tropic of Capricorn. Cold Deserts are near the Arctic part of the world. A Hot and Dry Desert is, as you can tell from the name, hot and dry. A cold desert is a desert that has snow in the winter instead of just dropping a few degrees in temperature like they would in a Hot and Dry Desert. It never gets warm enough for plants to grow.

Animals of the Desert

Vegetation in the Desert Desert flora have adapted to the extremes of heat and aridity by using both physical and behavioral mechanisms, much like desert animals.

Rain Forest the climate is very humid because of all the rainfall The rain forest has lots of rain because it is very hot and wet. This climate is found near the equator. That means that there is more direct sunlight hitting the land and sea there than anywhere else.

Animals of the Rainforest

Vegetation of the Rainforest Rainforest vegetation consists of carnivorous plants which trap insects, small animals and flies in the cavities filled with sweet or terrible smelling nectar. Four main vegetation layers are seen in the rainforests, namely the emergent, upper canopy, understory and forest floor. Trees towering about 200 feet above the forest floor are the emergents or the tallest trees which have huge trunks that measure up to 16 feet around. The leaves of these trees are broad and evergreen as they receive plenty of sunlight up there.

Earth’s Ocean The ocean holds the largest of Earth’s biomes. It covers 70% of the planet’s surface.ocean holds the largest of Earth’s biomes. It covers 70% of the planet’s surface. The ocean is not the same everywhere. There are many different ecosystems within the ocean depending on conditions such as the water temperature, the amount of sunlight that filters through the water, and the amount of nutrients. There are five ocean biomes - Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean, and the Arctic Ocean.

Animals Of the Ocean

Vegetation of the Ocean The vast ocean contains a large array of plant and animal life. According to National Geographic, the ocean covers more than 70 percent of the surface of the planet. It holds 320 million cubic miles of water. The deepest parts of the ocean may have little or no plant life. Because ocean plants need sunlight, most are either designed to float on the surface of the water, or grow on the ocean floor in water that is shallow enough to receive adequate sunlight.
