OME Logo Redesign New Logos for OME, OMERO, Bio-Formats, and Scifio

Agenda  Discuss design decisions leading to the creation of the new logos  Present the new logos to the team  Obtain feedback

Purpose of the Logo Redesign  Goals for redesigning logos for OME, OMERO, Bio-Formats and Scifio:  Professional, updated look  Unique brand establishment  Practical, simple in form  Communicate the branding message  Visually tie the product names to each other  Ties to the idea of collaboration

OME Branding Message  Collaborative effort, open-source  Leader in the effort to develop tools to support data management for biological light microscopy

Parts of a Logo  1) Icon  Visual graphic  2) Text  Typeface, font  Company/product name; sometimes a tagline  3) Color Palette  adds uniqueness and evokes mood  In most cases, a logo should be effective w/o color (print, placement against different colored backgrounds)

OME Icon Conceptualization  A shape that complements its name  “O” for Open, open source  Ties OME to to its commercial arm  Circles  Pros: clean, simple in form  Downside: bland, boring

Font Selection  Base font called ‘Montserrat’, free on Google API fonts  Slight modification in kerning (space between characters)  Sans serif font, better for smaller sizes  Clean, sleek, O complements circles in the icon

Color Palette  Took existing logo’s color scheme of red, green, and blue  Red: color of fire and blood, associated with energy, determination  Green: color of nature; symbolizes growth, harmony  Blue: color of sky/sea; associated with depth and stability (constant); symbolizes trust  Navy blue: sophistication, professionalism  Overall palette of boldness, leadership, collaboration

Tying All the Logos Together  How do we tie OMERO, Bio-Formats, and Scifio to OME?  All names have the letter O  Tie the O across the product names visually by using  Same font  Same color
