Norway – Jotunheimen

Moving to Alma-land The emotional issues The practical issues

New environment, New language = Change = Stress

Can you relate? The lifeblood of routines is the known and the familiar. Needless to say, when you move to a new country, where nothing is known and familiar, your routines get mightily disrupted. Suddenly, nothing…is a routine.(p. 6) The problem with routines is that until you’ve reestablished them, you can have a very low opinion of yourself. (p. 7) The art of crossing cultures, 2 nd ed., 2001 / by Craig Storti

Can you relate? The first thing an Englishman does on going abroad is to find fault with what is French, because it is not English.(p. 65) When I was thus suddenly cast on foreign land I found myself deprived of the use of speech and hearing; and, during some weeks, incapable not only of enjoying the pleasures of conversation, but even of asking or answering a question in the common intercourse of life…From a man I was again degraded to the dependence of a schoolboy…and helpless and awkward as I have ever been. My condition seemed as destitute of hope as it was devoid of pleasure. (p. 99)

Culture shock Loss of routines Feelings of incompetence Inefficient in completing tasks Not understanding the language or being able to communicate effectively in it Feeling lost and disoriented Frustration, anxiety

Countering Alma-shock

Grieving Humor Patience Preparation - prioritize Information Chocolate Acknowledge that this is difficult

Weekly Online News This week's Ex Libris forecast We again take a departure from our usual weather report (which is otherwise rather grey and dismal) to bring you THIS WEEK IN HISTORY. This week, we look at pivotal events we’re calling SOG (Starts of Greatness): 753 BC - Rome founded American revolution begins Library of Congress established Vendor demos are completed as part of the Alliance’s shared ILS RFP process Initial Alma training is completed for Alliance Cohort 1 core trainers Alliance SILS I-Team agrees to move to Primo 4.6 on May 3-4 None of these SOGgy events turned into greatness overnight, and some involved heartbreak, bloodshed and the feeding of hapless victims to lions. Over time, however, all of these events had a profound and long-lasting effect at both the national and international level. Questions? Comments? Problems to report? Ask us!Ask us! MORE >>
