MOOC for Educators: Exploring a personalized and scalable approach to professional development Glenn Kleiman & Mary Ann Wolf Friday Institute for Educational Innovation NC State University Raleigh, North Carolina, US

Massive Open Online Courses How many have registered for ….? How many have completed ….? How many have developed ….? Digital learning transition MOOC-Ed?

Why MOOC-Eds? All the changes in education require opportunities for teachers and administrators to update their knowledge, skills and professional practices. Resources for PD are very limited in most places. Traditional “sit and listen” approaches are not effective; principles of effective PD are known. Educators need a chance to learn in the ways they are asked to teach. Personalized, accessible, effective, scalable PD is essential for successful school reforms.

Blended Learning

Conclusion MOOC-Eds can provide personalized, accessible, effective, scalable PD that is best blended with other forms of PD to help prepare educators for the rapid changes in what, how, when, where and why their students learn. We are just beginning to learn how to optimize MOOC-Eds as scalable, effective PD.
