Spreading the Word: Creating a Community & Family Medicine Website Jo Marie Reilly, M.D. Theresa Woehrle, M.D. Anne Walsh, PA-C, MMSc

National Interest in Family Medicine  U.S. medical student interest in family medicine careers is in decline.  U.S. seniors matching in family medicine is in decline (7.4% in 2009 vs. 8.2% in 2008).

Family Medicine at the USC-KSOM  Small family medicine department  Little visibility on campus  Family Medicine residency located off-site  Great need to have local, virtual access to family medicine information for students

Medical School Web-Based Student- Focused Specialty Site  Traditionally, medical school websites are department-focused, not student-focused.  Need to develop an innovative web- based information site to connect with medical students.

Website Development  USC-Keck Family Medicine department received a “seed grant” to develop a web-based student project in June 2008 from the California Academy of Family Physicians.

Website Design Concept  Student-assisted design  Family Medicine Interest Group student input  4th year students matched in Family Medicine input  Family medicine faculty and staff input  Inexpensive (web-design by medical student)

Needs Assessment for Website  Questioning students, faculty and staff, needs assessment included: 1. Career advisement for each year 2. Links to supplemental websites 3. Wiki access to required clerkship information 4. Student-generated description of clerkship preceptors/sites 5. Funding and financial aid links

Getting the Word Out: Site Publicity  Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG)  Student Career Advising  Third year clerkship preceptor selection  Linked to Family Medicine Department website  Linked to Primary Care Community Health Project

Goals of Student-Focused Website  Paying for a Family Medicine Career  Longitudinal access to Family Medicine career development info (years 1-4)  Links to school, local, state and national Family Medicine sites  Wiki access to Family Medicine preceptors for required and elective clerkship opportunities  Links to USC Family Medicine alumni and residents

Alumni Profiles  USC-KSOM Alumni in Primary Care Biosketches Pictures  Highlight diverse career opportunities in Family Medicine

The Future of Family Medicine  Insert a photo here to break

Password-Protected Searchable Wiki

Website Progress To-Date  Site has been under development since late 2008-early  It is now developed, designed and undergoing implementation.  Plans: Full-integration of the site with Wiki.

Evaluation Goals  1. How many students are using the website?  2. What is the quality of student website experience ?

Website Evaluation  1. Family Medicine Clerkship end-of- Orientation Week evaluation  2. 4 th year students matching in Family Medicine  3. First and second year Family Medicine Interest Group Students

Lessons Learned  Student commitment to web design (students move on)  Site upkeep  Centralized coordination and data entry  Culture change

Future Plans  Evaluation of Wiki component by next year  Website design update scheduled this summer  Continue to build alumni profiles on website  Continue to build community preceptor site contacts and student- generated descriptions on Wiki
