IT Jobs Positions available in the field of Information Technology

Introduction Students often say, “I don’t know exactly what I want to do when I get out of school, but I want to do something with computers.” This can mean a lot of things, there is a wide range of computer related positions, with an equally wide range of education, experience, and training required to work in these positions. There are many things to consider when looking for a job “working with computers” including and certainly not limited to:  How much schooling can I afford and do I want to go through?  How much do I want to make?  Where do I want to end up working?  What type of work environment do I wish to spend my days in?

Goal of This Presentation This overview of some of the jobs available in an IT department will provide the reader with job descriptions, education/experience required, starting salary, and and a look at the working environment for each position. These are typical Information Technology jobs, but each company will have unique needs, job descriptions, educational/experience requirements, hours, and working conditions. Salary information obtained from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics and reflect salaries for entry level positions in Orange County, California. Good luck with your career plans!

IT Department Hierarchy Each company is different, this is one way an IT department can be organized.

Information Systems Manager JOB SUMMARY: Under direction of the financial services director, plans, organizes and conducts company wide management reviews of operating and financial systems and procedures; oversees the development and operation of integrated management information systems and services; organizes and manages telephone and network communication systems; and performs related work as required. Work involves regular contact with other departments, divisions, various boards, and the general public. Supervision is exercised over professional, technical and clerical personnel.

Information Systems Manager DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Business and major course works in Accounting and Business Systems. Considerable experience in business management and systems. EQUIPMENT OPERATED: Servers, PC, printer, telephone, calculator, copier, fax machine. WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is in a climate controlled indoor office and normal outdoor elements. ENTRY LEVEL ANNUAL SALARY: $125,582

I.S. Manager’s Office

Systems Administrator JOB SUMMARY: Under direction, installs, configures, troubleshoots, administers, and maintains local area networks (LANs), network servers, operating systems and services, network communication systems, including wide area networks (WANs), network switches, routers, concentrators, VPNs, firewalls, backup systems; Repair, install, and troubleshoot personal computers (PC’s), software, and related equipment; support PC users in use of various hardware and software; act as liaison between the company and outside services regarding PC’s, servers, operating systems, and network communication devices; and performs related work as required. Work involves regular contact with all departments and divisions. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a background in science or business related discipline or equivalent experience, extensive experience in network administration, server installation and configuration, network and systems security, network performance tuning, operating systems, system backups, and network connected devices, and certification as a Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE) or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Systems Administrator EQUIPMENT OPERATED: Network servers, PCs, cabling, printers, telephones, fax machines, copiers, back-up drives, document-imaging scanners, network communication equipment, network analyzers & test hardware. WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is in a climate-controlled noisy computer room, indoor office and normal outdoor elements. ENTRY LEVEL ANNUAL SALARY: $72,230

Client/Server Developer JOB SUMMARY: Under direction, develops, designs, codes, prototypes, tests, and implement business systems and application software using client/server design models. Analyzes and evaluates current business practices, policies, and procedures, and performs related work as required. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, preferably in a computer science or business related discipline. Extensive experience in programming and business application software development, and prefer certified as a Microsoft developer (MSD.), or any equivalent combination of education and experience

Document Imaging Specialist JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision coordinates the operation of an electronic records management service for the departments using the document imaging system stressing accuracy, control, consistency, and confidentiality; performs related work as required. Work involves regular contact with other divisions, departments, vendors, and the public. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school including or supplemented by courses in data entry operations. Some records management experience, with strong ability to organize and manage documents, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Document Imaging Specialist EQUIPMENT OPERATED: Optical imaging software and equipment such as: scanner, printer, optical disk drives and computer, printer, phone, FAX machine, tape backup unit, copier. WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is in a climate- controlled indoor office and normal outdoor elements. ENTRY LEVEL ANNUAL SALARY: $42,382

Data Entry Workstation

Computer Operations Supervisor JOB SUMMARY: Under direction, performs and supervises personnel engaged in computer operation, data entry, and document imaging. Oversees and insures effective operation of computer, peripheral equipment, computer room, and system backups. Repair, install, and troubleshoot personal computers (PC’s), software, and related equipment; support PC users in use of various hardware and software; act as liaison between the company and outside services regarding PC’s; Maintains hardware contracts, department inventories, equipment and disposals; and performs related work as required. Supervision is exercised over departmental personnel. Work involves regular contact with other departments, divisions and vendors.

Computer Operations Supervisor DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school including or supplemented by courses in data entry operation, or equivalent combination of education and experience. EQUIPMENT OPERATED: Servers, PCs, Printers, Phones, FAX Machines, Copiers, Tape Drives, Scanners, Shredders, CD Writers, Vaults, and small computer devices. WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is in a climate controlled indoor office, normal outdoor elements, and occasionally a noisy computer room. ENTRY LEVEL ANNUAL SALARY: $49,864
