Design-House Designers Couture designers that work for design houses, such as Chanel, and may produce two major collections each year.

Design Process and Schedules Designers develop their new designs each season before the marketing period begins. – Marketing period is generally six months before consumers will purchase the merchandise.

Steps of the Design Process 1.Basic Decisions 2.Design Concept and Samples 3.Sales Research and Analysis 4.Design Presentation 5.Purchase Orders 6.Production

Designers for Manufacturers Most apparel designers employed in the fashion industry work for manufacturers who mass-produce garments. Designers specialize in a particular classification of clothing.

Step 1 – Basic Decisions Decisions that are made before the design process ever begins. Considerations include fabric choice, design ideas for the garment, number of items to be made and sold, and type of promotion to retail stores.

Step 2 – Design Concept and Samples The designer develops the concept and appearance of the fashion item, using the elements of design. Sketches or diagrams are prepared to illustrate the design. Patterns and samples are then produced.

Step 3 – Sales Research and Analysis The designer’s sales department plays a key a role. The department keeps records that show the history of styles previously offered and the quantities and prices of styles that sold. – This information helps a manufacturer determine not only how much should be produced, but also what merchandise should be offered.

Step 4 – Design Presentation The collection or line is ready to be shown. Designers participate in elaborate fashion weeks and have their merchandise available for preview in showrooms.

Step 5 – Purchase Orders Retail buyers will begin purchasing merchandise for their stores when new items have been presented.

Step 6 - Production After the orders have been placed by the retail buyers, production begins/

Apparel Company Divisions 3 main divisions – Design – Production – Sales

Design Division The design division must be aware of the company’s target market when creating new collections or lines.

Production Division Responsible for producing items in sizes that the retail stores have ordered.

Sales Division Markets the line and acts as the coordinator between the manufacturer and the retail store.
