Presentation transcript:

The Relationship Between Businesses and the Social Environment Social and Ethical Environments – how have they changed? Effects of these changes on Business Responses by business to these changes

Being Green To what extent do you think it is possible for businesses to behave in a ‘green’ manner? In what ways have supermarkets jumped on the ‘green’ bandwagon? Do you think it is a responsibility of large firms to behave in an environmentally responsible manner? Should the government intervene to force companies to meet environmental targets? Is there a conflict between environmental friendliness and consumerism? Report on Volkswagen – what did they do? What impact has this had? Do you think this was wrong? Why/ why not?

Environmental Issues What problems face us? Why do businesses care for the environment?

Environmental Issues Negative externalities: costs imposed on society by a firm Cost-benefit analysis: used in making decisions about large- scale investment projects (weighing up whether the benefits outweigh the costs)

How might government intervene to minimise costs on society?

To what extent is the need to protect the environment now more of an opportunity than a threat for businesses?

How do you think society has changed in the last 10, 20 or 30 years? How have demographics changed? What is the population? What is the life expectancy? Births? Where do people live? Ageing population?

How would the population characteristics and trends given for the UK in 2015 affect decision making within the following businesses / organisations? A large house builder Supermarkets NHS Schools A national newspaper Demographics
