Matt Woodford Hub Lead East Midlands KS2 Assessment Wednesday 3 rd February 2016

54 x 23 What method have you taught your students? What are the mistakes that students might make on this question?

Formal methods are important if students are to gain ‘working’ marks. Key Stage 2: Mathematics test framework: Formal Methods

Arithmetic paper is going to require a great deal of fluency with mental maths skills as well as an efficient use of written methods. ‘The questions will be placed in an approximate order of difficulty.’ Key Stage 2: Mathematics test framework: Structure

Note: No tracing paper mentioned Key Stage 2: Mathematics test framework: Resources No ruler in paper 1

“We can’t give full information about what the scale will look like yet. We need to wait until pupils have taken the tests and the tests have been marked before we can set the national standard and the rest of the scale.” The raw score on the test (out of 110) will be converted to a scaled score. 100 as a scaled score = at national standard. We don’t know what raw score will equate to the 100 scaled score. Guidance on Scaled Scores Scaled-scores

“Headteachers will need to include results from the national curriculum tests in their annual reports to parents. They will need to report the pupil’s scaled score and whether or not they met the national standard.” “At KS1 the national standard will roughly equate to an old level 2b. At KS2 this will roughly equate to an old level 4b. Otherwise levels and scaled scores will not be comparable.” In July children will receive a raw score, a scaled score and a confirmation as to whether or not they have attained the national standard. (Conversion tables will become available at the same time). Guidance on Scaled Scores Scaled-scores

“We currently advise that pupils who aren’t expected to reach level 2 (KS1) or level 3 (KS2) of the national curriculum by May shouldn’t sit the tests. (Sample materials can help schools make a judgment. These pupils will still be included in the baseline figure when calculating school performance.” “There won’t be separate tests for the most able from Instead we are developing each test so that there is scope for higher attaining pupils to show their strengths”. A test of KS2 - not just Year 6 Key Stage 2: Mathematics test framework:

Certain mental arithmetic skills will only be tested indirectly through the arithmetic paper. However, good mental arithmetic skills are fundamental if a child is to be successful in the arithmetic paper, as well as in the number reasoning in paper 2 and 3. 3G3b – make 3-D shapes using modelling materials 5M8 – estimate capacity (e.g. using water) Key Stage 2: Mathematics test framework: Content that can’t be fully assessed

‘Big numbers’ are definitely in. It’s better not to use commas than to use them wrongly. Multiple choice questions have potentially got trickier as there may be extra wrong answers, so the last one can’t be guessed at.

Teachers will be able to use RAISEonline to analyse their pupils’ individual results. Because scaled scores and levels aren’t equivalent, you won’t be able to make comparisons between how your school performs in the 2016 tests and the previous year’s results.RAISEonline Year 7 teachers will be able to view their incoming pupils’ scaled scores so that they can prepare for their new intake. There will continue to be no link between KS2 test results and teacher assessment. Guidance on Scaled Scores

6.7 Performance descriptor. Describes the typical characteristics of pupils whose performance in the KS2 tests is at the threshold of the expected standard. Key Stage 2: Mathematics test framework:
