Today’s Warm-up Welcome to Second Semester! Pick up a new assignment sheet, Start of Quarter Assignment, and class notes handout on our next topic: Linear Momentum. Linear Momentum is Mass times Velocity What makes a moving object have a lot of momentum? How can you change the momentum of a moving object? Football Momentum

Impulse is Force times Time Interval Impulse is needed to change an object ’ s momentum. Greater impulse (and change in momentum) can be accomplished by increasing FORCE or TIME What TWO ways could you increase the impulse of the racquet on the ball?

How are force, time, and momentum change related? How can you reduce the force required to change the momentum of a moving object? What is a real-world example of this?

Examples of Impulse Airbags increase the time to change your momentum, so less force is needed. Pole Vaulter Landing on a soft pad increases the time and reduces the force needed to change her momentum football pads, helmets

When is linear momentum conserved? When there in NO IMPULSE (= change in momentum) When there are no OUTSIDE FORCES When the system is closed

How are collisions related to momentum? Most collisions occur in short time intervals and the colliding objects can be considered a closed system. Momentum conservation can be used to solve collision problems.

Test your understanding of MOMENTUM Which has more momentum, for each pair? 2200 lb.Mazda Miata 7000 lb. Chevy Suburban going 10 mphgoing 10 mph Chevy Suburban going 10 mphMazda Miata going 100 mph Barbie traveling 1 mphChevy Suburban at rest

Test your understanding of IMPULSE Which requires more IMPULSE, for each pair? Stopping a Chevy Suburban going 50 mph, in 10 secondsgoing 10 mph, in 10 secondsStopping a Chevy Suburban going 5 mph, in 10 secondsgoing 5 mph, in 1 secondStopping a Chevy Suburban going 50 mph, in 10 secondsgoing 5 mph, in 1 second Which requires more FORCE?
