Purpose The implementation of recovery principles can shape mental health programs by developing and delivering services that are reflective of, and relevant to, the people we serve who are seeking success in a variety of chosen roles, settings, and communities.
Objectives Review the types of rehab options and continuing care services associated with the current mental health system in Minnesota Learn the principles of recovery and implementation in practice Examine how principles of practice ensure cultural responsiveness in a recovery ‐ oriented mental health system.

Recovery is: self-directed & empowering involves a personal recognition of the need for change & transformation Holistic Unique & impacted by cultural beliefs & traditions. A person’s cultural experience often shapes the recovery path that is right for him/her Exists on a continuum of improved health & wellness Emerges from hope and gratitude Involves a process of healing & self-redefinition Involves addressing discrimination & transcending shame & stigma Is supported by peers & allies Involves re-joining & rebuilding life in the community Recovery is a reality

People will have a sense that things will improve & life’s goals can be met. Providers of mental health services will build on a person’s strengths & welcome peer & family involvement. Personal Choice. People will have a sense of empowerment & personal responsibility. Providers will respect a person’s direction in their individual service goals. Holistic Approach. Providers of mental health services will recognize the whole person: mind, body, spirit, culture & community. There is recognition that setbacks and successes are both parts of life’s goal achievement.

National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) Theme 2: Communication and Language Assistance: Offer language assistance to individuals who have limited English proficiency and/or other communication needs, at no cost to them, to facilitate timely access to all health care and services. Inform all individuals of the availability of language assistance services clearly and in their preferred language, verbally and in writing. Ensure the competence of individuals providing language assistance, recognizing that the use of untrained individuals and/or minors as interpreters should be avoided. Provide easy-to-understand print and multimedia materials and signage in the languages commonly used by the populations in the service area.
