Aims of the lesson: to generalize and enlarge pupils’ knowledge about mass media; to develop pupils’ speaking skills in monologue and dialogue speech, in audition; to provide pupils with all kinds of information dealing with different aspects of mass media and its role in our life; to encourage students to express personal opinion; to develop pupils’ cognitive and creative skills.

Result of the lesson: They will know all of the vocabulary. They will analyze the role the media plays in their own life

Organization moment -Good morning, pupils! -How are you? Do you feel spring in the air? You must have a fantastic mood today, on the first day of spring. So smile to one another and let’s start. -Who is on duty today? -What date is it today? -What day is it today? -Who is absent today?

Vocabulary: a ball game Speaking about mass media we can’t do without topical vocabulary. So I’ll throw a ball to some of you and say any word from our theme. You are to make up a sentence with it.

Reading and Speaking Read the text and discuss it in small groups: I group – text from the book II group- text from internet resources III group – text from library Groups of 5. Roles: Secretary – notes everything down. Designer – makes the poster look attractive. Board of Creative Directors – generate smart ideas. Proof Reader – checks for mistakes. Presenter – presents the poster when it’s finished.

Game “Hot Potato” I need 6 pupils for this game. The first pupil must name 5 things which I say to you. But he must do it simultaneously with other pupils who will pass the toy to one another quickly. Then we’ll change the first pupil. E.g. Name 5 titles of newspapers (magazines). Name 5 popular topics of teen’s magazines. Etc.

Questions for discussions: What is Mass Media? How do we get information that we need? What information can be found in Mass Media? What Radio music programmes do you know? What is your favourite TV programme? Why? What programеs do your parents prefer? Do you think everyone should have a computer? Why? What is the value of internet? What types of the Mass Media have you learnt? Which of them do you prefer? What about their advantages and disadvantages?

Advantages of the mass media We can learn more about the society around us. We can travel round the world without wasting money. We can express our opinions. We can take part in shows and competitions. Students can make good use of the mass media to learn and find new friends.

Are there any disadvantages of the mass media? Think of them! to get lazy, to put on weight, it’s a waste of time, to get nervous, to damage your eyes, to sleep badly after horror films, to learn about the bad side of life, to watch films for adults, to have no time to communicate with relatives and friends, to have no time for sport activities in the fresh air, to stop writing letters to your relatives.
