Good examples from students
First Steps Complete the watercolor technique sheet Complete the pen and in technique sheet Choose your animal (pick something interesting that is showing movement)
Creating the Composition Using a ruler and pencil, draw lightly and make your paper an 18” X18” square-DO NOT CUT THE PAPER. Now make a border in your 18” X 18” square area 4 inches in from the sides Center box should be even and measure 10” by 10” 18” 4” Center box is 10” X 10”
Animal Drawing Draw your animal so that it is coming out of the center box. Utilizing a corner to overlap the animal is a good start. Remember draw lightly and don’t erase too much; doing this ruins the integrity of the watercolor paper.
Drawing the Outside Area After you have completed the animal and it is just where you want it, begin adding the background. Draw lightly in pencil first. The background should extend outside the center box. Keep composition balance in mind because too much will ruin the composition and take away from your animal, also too little will make it look unfinished.
Protect the Background Make sure you keep the background where it will not be painted VERY CLEAN Make sure you keep the background where it will not be painted VERY CLEAN
Begin Watercolor Remember Watercolor is about layering. Painting on wet paint paper will create bleeding/smearing Paint all of the animal Do not paint the background outside the center box USE TECHNIQUES YOU HAVE LEARNED
Complete the Image with Pen & Ink Technique DO NOT ADD COLOR OUTSIDE THE BOX --- EXCEPT ON THE ANIMAL
