Microscope Lab Objective: I can learn how to properly use a microscope in order to view microscopic specimens and describe them both qualitatively through a sketch and quantitatively through measurements.

(Body) Tube Revolving Nose Piece Shortest Low power Objective lens Med. power Objective lens Longest High power Objective lens Stage clips Diaphragm Lamp (mirror) Ocular Lens (Eyepiece) How to calculate total magnification: Multiply whole # on ocular lens with whole # on objective lens in use (NO decimals – those are lens sizes) Arm (carry) Stage Coarse Adjustment (Big) Fine Adjustment (Small) Base (carry)

Microscope PartFunction Coarse AdjustmentFocuses under low-power Fine AdjustmentFocuses under high-power Lamp or MirrorProvides light Low-Power Objective Lens Magnifies less, but sees more area High-Power Objective Lens Magnifies more, but sees less area DiaphragmControls how much light goes through

Final Thoughts Follow directions carefully – ask ONLY after read and tried… Sketching WILL be annoying – LOTS of cells – Balance between time and looks (it IS a sketch…) Keep lens/slide/specimen SAFE – watch out for contact – don’t let scratch or break! Learn how to use on own…can ask for help from friends, but will be tested later with a Microscope Practicum “Driving Test”
