HEAD INJURY

Head injuries By the end of this session you will be able to: understand that head injuries can be serious recognise and treat someone with a head injury.

Head injuries - minor What you may see: Brief period of impaired responsiveness, following a blow to the head Mild headache Scalp wound Loss of memory regarding the incident Dizziness Nausea on recovery.

Head injuries - severe What you will see: History of a recent head injury A reduced level of response The casualty may become unresponsive Severe headache Unequal pupil size Blood or watery fluid coming from the ears or nose.

Head injuries What you should do: If the casualty is responsive, help them to sit down and reassure them Apply an ice pack Control any bleeding by applying pressure around the wound If the head injury is mild, stay with them until they recover If the head injury is severe, dial 999 or 112.
