ANIMATING AN INANIMATE OBJECT

ANTHROPOMORPHISM ANTHROPOMORPHISM IS THE ATTRIBUTION OF HUMAN CHARACTERISTICS OR BEHAVIOR TO AN ANIMAL OR OBJECT

SKETCHBOOK ACTIVITY #1 ANTHROPOMORPHISM IS EVERYWHERE IN OUR CULTURE. CAN YOU THINK OF SOME EXAMPLES? TAKE A MINUTE TO BRAINSTORM A FEW. LIST THESE IN YOUR SKETCHBOOK. DISCUSS THESE WITH YOUR NEIGHBORS. DID YOU THINK OF THE SAME EXAMPLES? WHERE ALL OF YOUR EXAMPLES INANIMATE OR ANIMALS GIVEN HUMAN CHARACTERISTICS?

ANTHROPOMORPHISM EXAMPLES

SKETCHBOOK ACTIVITY #2 YOU WILL BE GIVEN AN OBJECT. YOUR TASK IS TO ANTHROPOMORPHIZE THIS OBJECT IN THE TIME GIVEN. YOU WILL DRAW THIS IN YOUR SKETCHBOOK. GIVE IT AN ENVIRONMENT/BACKGROUND. DO NOT COLLABORATE WITH YOUR NEIGHBOR! WHEN TIME IS UP, COMPARE THE DIFFERENCES IN YOUR NOW ANIMATED OBJECTS. HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT? HOW ARE THEY SIMILAR? WRITE THIS IN YOUR SKETCHBOOK.

SURREALISM SURREALISM IS AN ART MOVEMENT THAT FOCUSED ON THE IRRATIONAL JUXTAPOSITION OF IMAGES TO CREATE DREAM-LIKE IMAGES. IN OTHER WORDS, SURREALIST WOULD DRAW/PAINT IMAGES THAT COULD BE CONSIDERED “REALISTIC” BUT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN IN REAL LIFE. HOW DO SURREALISM AND ANTHROPOMORPHISM RELATE?

ANTHROPOMORPHISM AND SURREALISM

ANIMATING AN INANIMATE OBJECT YOUR CHALLENGE IS TO CREATE A PAINTING THAT CONTAINS AN ANIMATED INANIMATE OBJECT. YOUR OBJECT SHOULD HAVE A BACKGROUND AND A NON-CENTERED FOCAL POINT. YOU MAY USE ANY TYPE OF PAINT. STEP 1: PICK AN INANIMATE OBJECT. IT MUST NOT ALREADY BE ALIVE (HINT: A FLOWER IS ALIVE!!) STEP 2: SKETCH IDEAS OF HOW YOU WILL “ANIMATE” THIS OBJECT IN YOUR SKETCHBOOK. STEP 3: PICK YOUR FAVORITE ANIMATED OBJECT. CREATE A BACKGROUND FOR THE OBJECT. PLAN YOUR COMPOSITION. STEP 4: PICK WHAT TYPE OF PAINT YOU WILL USE. STEP 5: DRAW AND PAINT YOUR COMPOSITION. YOU MAY CHOOSE PAPER 9X12” OR LARGER.
