PDQ PowerPoint Education Closers
Surface Door Closers What is a Door Closer? A Surface Closer is a mechanical device that is mounted to the surface of the door or frame. It closes the door after someone manually opens it, or after it was automatically opened by an electrified opener. Door closers have internal springs and hydraulic oil with cylinders. All door closers have valves that adjust the speed of the door closing and latching. Surface closers can be used on any door, glass and aluminum, wood and metal doors. Concealed Closer: A device mounted in the top of the door or header that makes use of a spring for closing, and a compression chamber from which liquid or air escapes slowly, to close a door at a controlled speed.

Terminology
Spring Power: Mechanical pre-loading of spring in closer to adjust closing force. On sized closers, this is preset and not adjustable; for example, size 3. On all PDQ closers this pre-loading is adjustable based on the closer. Most can be adjusted from 1-6.

Terminology Closer Size: Closing Force The closing force of a door is taken 30 inches from the hinge when the door is opened 1/2 to 3 inches. (Weight of door used varies with size of door closer being tested).
Terminology Closing Speed: Sweep (swing): Controls closing of door from full open to approximately 10 degrees from closing to full closed. Latch: Controls closing of door from approximately 10 degrees from closing to full closed Delayed action (optional) Delays door from closing at approximately 70 degrees Back Check: Protects hardware, surrounding walls and objects without restricting the door degree of opening. Used primarily to prevent door from being slammed open due to wind

Terminology Closer Arms Round Flat Door Saver Hold Open Track Arm
Terminology Temperature Compensating Valves: Mechanism that adjusts for the expansion and contraction of the closer fluid resulting from temperature fluctuations. Parallel Arm Bracket: Structure which holds end of closer arm to frame or door in parallel arm applications
Basic Terms: Closers Sweep: One of two valves required to control the speed of the door. The first called Sweep or fully open to about 10 degrees SWEEP SPEED
Basic Terms: Closers Latch Speed: At the10-degree point another valve takes over to control the final speed. This is called the latch speed. When adjusting a closer, the ideal target time needed for the door to close is about six seconds. Back Check: On exterior doors a third valve, back check is needed. This valve slows the door down from opening too fast and/or hitting against a stop or wall. Delayed Action: Addition valve that delays the closer from reaching the sweep function, to allow a period of time to pass through the door. Used for entrances where more time is needed.
