Where students are Where we want students to be (Standards) Lots & Lots of Work But it’s a lot of work. And it’s best for all students.

Proper Use of Data Really Helps Instructional Decision Making

A strong sense of purpose (Militello’s Collaborative Inquiry Action Cycle) Time Training and Modeling Ainsworth’s Big Ideas to make curriculum manageable and viable To Implement Standards-Based Education Well, Teachers Need:

Key Learnings Leading and Resourcing Change

My Ideal School Click here to view the website of Relevant School After 20 years of exploration, I created my ideal school. This school represents a synthesis of some of the best ideas in education which I have come across.

Key Learnings Include: Website creation Creation of Emergency Plan The impact of Boards on schools The difficulty of fitting an ideal student’s schedule into one day, and the importance of ELO

Key Learnings Developing People

Doing the work of supervision and evaluation is invaluable Importance of explaining my framework

Key Learnings from Readings Balcony/Dance Floor Dysfunctional Organizations “There is no such thing as a dysfunctional organization, because every organization is perfectly aligned to achieve the results it currently gets” (Heifetz, p. 17). Industrial Age System of Schooling “… the educational system is responding to the pressure to perform by trying to turn up the speed of the assembly line” (Senge, p. 37).

Know Thyself “…sacrifice what you are for what you will become.” Building Relationships Community “If your emotional abilities aren’t in hand, if you don’t have self-awareness, if you are not able to manage your distressing emotions, if you can’t have empathy and have effective relationships, then no matter how smart you are, you are not going to get very far.” Daniel Goleman Key Strategies

More Key Strategies Meeting Structures Be Collaborative, Collaborative, Collaborative. 7 Norms Schools should be learning organizations!

Bold Steps Education should thoroughly engage students. “We should be waking students up to what they have inside of themselves.” Sir Ken Robinson Sir Ken Robinson Education should be relevant and dynamic. Kunskapsskolan Kunskapsskolan Education should do more than prepare students for a four year, academic college experience. Pathways to Prosperity Pathways to Prosperity Education needs to reach all students (SBE). Education for all = Differentiation and Intervention for all. Our paradigm needs to shift away from an Industrial Age model of education.

My Path Move outward in the Circles of Influence to create systemic change Earn doctoral degree The path is not always visible, but it is always adventurous!

Where can one have the most leverage in systemic educational change? How can cultural norms of education be changed? (Tyack and Tobin) What will it take to create a sea change in our nation’s educational structure? What could be a new form of school structure besides public, private, and charter?
