14–19 Team Why are we here ?  During Year 11 schools will support young people with their progression to post 16 education, training or employment  Today is the start of a process  This event and the “Planning your future” booklet provide general information, advice and guidance and an initial opportunity to explore options  Schools and Colleges will hold their own events

14–19 Team Main points  What is “Raising the Participation Age” ?  What are the options post 16 ?  Decision making  What else is available at today’s event ?  Where can I find out more ?

14–19 Team Raising the Participation Age (RPA)  Well over 90% of young people already participate in education and training in Year 12  RPA sets out the objective that all young people in the current Year 11 will do this  This offers all young people the opportunity to reach the higher levels of skills and qualifications necessary to succeed in the modern world

14–19 Team What are the options post 16 1.Full time education at a school or college 2.An Apprenticeship – the most common way of combining a job with training for further qualifications 3.A package combining voluntary or paid work with training 4.Employment – many jobs already include training, under RPA all should

14–19 Team Qualification Levels Foundation Learning (Entry level – level 1) Intermediate (Level 2) Advanced (Level 3) No or few qualifications Some GCSEs D to E Usually at least 4 GCSE C or above

14–19 Team English and Maths  Anybody who does not get a GCSE A*-C in maths or English will be expected to continue to study these subjects, whichever pathway they follow  For people who get close to a C this will probably mean a “re-sit” course at GCSE  For others it could be a course which will allow them to achieve a GCSE later on

14–19 Team School Sixth Forms  Predominantly Level 3 provision through AS and A Levels at All Saints, Fulford, Huntington, Archbishop Holgate’s and Joseph Rowntree.  In addition, vocational courses and Foundation Learning at Archbishop Holgate’s School, vocational courses at Joseph Rowntree and the International Baccalaureate at Huntington School.

14–19 Team Colleges  York College – a wide range of courses at all levels including AS and A Levels, vocational and occupational courses  Askham Bryan College – vocational and occupational courses at all levels, specialising in land based areas  Specialist provision

14–19 Team Apprenticeships  The most common way of combining a job with training for further qualifications  Over 200 frameworks available, tailored to different jobs, available at different levels and providing a pathway to higher education  Earn while you learn – minimum Apprenticeship wage must be paid

14–19 Team Foundation Learning  Pre-apprenticeship and other work based training courses are available, with specialist options for young people with special educational needs and disabilities

14–19 Team What about just getting a job ?  RPA is encouraging participation in education and training post 16  The employment market is very difficult for young people – this was the case even before the recession  Research shows that many young people seeking jobs at 16 end up with part time work  Post 16 programmes of study will often include Work Experience
