American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education The Principal Pipeline – A Partnership with Wallace Foundation – partners, providers and principals. ” While the impact of partnerships is not yet fully understood, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests that school districts that partner with local principal training providers are more likely to leverage programmatic changes that result in principals who are better equipped to lead schools to improve student performance. Both school districts and program providers recognize that if properly nurtured partnerships can provide fertile soil for improving the impact of preparation and training on school leaders performance. “ – Partner Effectiveness Continuum, King, C.L. (2014)

American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education Partners in the Principal Pipeline Initiative Principals, Providers (School Districts and Institutions of Higher Education), Wallace Foundation, AACTE, CCSSO, UCEA, among others. Beneficiaries- Principals and Aspiring Principals, k-12 Students, Teachers, Students, and Communities.

American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education Key Questions for Consideration As a Central office point person working with the Principal Pipeline Initiative, how did your district determine who the partners would be in the Principal Pipeline Initiative? How have your partnerships grown/changed? How are university providers working with the new model? Does your district prepare its own principals? Why did you decide that this was the route that you would take? How are university faculty or other providers engaged in instruction, supervision and other support? As a higher education faculty member at a provider institution, how has the initiative impacted your work? How has your program contributed to the initiative? Can you identify the criteria that you used in joining the partnership?

American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education What criteria do you have for aspiring principals, i.e. years of teaching experience, certification beyond the teacher’s license? Has the state made modifications for your candidates in light of the partnership? How did you interface with the community, school board members, practicing and aspiring principals, and with teachers in the district or at your institution? How do you match aspiring principals to mentors? Do state regulations and/or accreditation issues and standards mesh with your principal pipeline activities? How do you ensure that partners such as the teachers organization, local universities and the your state educational agency are a part of the vision?

American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education As a principal mentor or a principal, how would you compare experiences prior to and within the Pipeline initiative? What differences have you experienced, in regard to student success, in teacher satisfaction, and principal efficacy since the implementation of the partnership-in the schools? What areas for change or improvement have you documented? What advice would you give to others who want to form partnerships for improvement in principal preparation and practice?

American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education Final Thoughts What advice would you give to others who are building bridges or wanting to form partnerships for improvement in principal preparation and practice? “I firmly believe that success lies in the combination of both talent and business savvy, and that the magic comes through partnership between them both”.- Delphine Arnault

American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education Only a genuine partnership can bring about positive change to enhance educational leadership, quality and benefit for all.
