State of NJ lagging behind in HIE planning Failed attempt to kick start an HIE initiative Group of hospitals that have been discussing data exchange Some success at Atlantic Health with data exchange to physicians Looming meaningful use criteria for data exchange A number of other hospitals using the same HIE vendor Trust between a group of CIO’s that have known each other for years

January Eleven north and central hospitals and two large physician groups got together to begin discussions about data sharing – becomes North Central NJ HIE February American Recovery & Reinvestment Act September State requests Applications for the Health Information Exchange Grants in NJ September Northern Central New Jersey Health Information Exchange Collaborative submits grant application October NCNJHIEC receives notification of $3.4 M ONC Grant Award

Ensure health information is available when and where it is needed both locally and nationally Improve care coordination, access, outcomes and efficiencies through the use of technologies facilitating to real-time clinical exchange Comply with national standards related to privacy and security considerations Allow organizations to maintain individual technology strategies Provide consumers with their health information and encourage active and informed participation
