The whole reason why the term “shepherd” is used to refer to a leadership position in the church – is because their work is so much like the work of an actual shepherd!

What A Shepherd Is/Does:

A. He Knows The Sheep (Jn. 10:14) B. He Watches Over Them (Acts 20:28-31)

C. He Goes Before The Sheep (Ps. 78:52-53) “But He led forth His own people like sheep, And guided them in the wilderness like a flock; He led them safely, so that they did not fear; But the sea engulfed their enemies.” C. Heb. 13:7 “Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith.”

F. He Is Accountable For The Sheep (Jer. 33:12-13)

Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. (Jn. 10:1-2)

I Tim. 3:1 “This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work.” From “oregetai,” “to stretch one’s self out in order to touch or grasp.” It’s not just “I want,” but “I SACRIFICE!”
