“Why Marriage Matters” A North American Perspective on Press/Library Partnerships Charles Watkinson AUL, Publishing, University of Michigan Library Director, University of Michigan Press

Three Important Trends

2008/ Abilene Christian Akron Alberta Arizona Calgary Concordia Delaware George Mason Georgia Indiana Kentucky Marquette Michigan MIT Nebraska New England New York North Texas Northwestern Oregon State Penn State Purdue Southern Illinois Stanford Syracuse Temple Texas Christian Texas Tech Utah Utah State West Virginia Wilfrid Laurier Yale More Reporting Relationships

AUL for Publishing and Director of University of Michigan Press Donald and Delpha Campbell University Librarian and OSU Press Director Executive Director, Temple University Press and Scholarly Communications Officer, University Libraries Director, Indiana University Press and Digital Publishing Reporting E.g., Penn State, Syracuse, MIT, NYU Reporting, Collocation E.g., Georgia, Arizona, Utah, North Texas Reporting, Collocation, Shared Strategy E.g., Michigan, Oregon State, Purdue, Indiana Richer Collaborations on Campuses

LIBRARY PUBLISHERS 55% of academic libraries in North America either developing or implementing a publishing program (79% of ARL libraries) libraries listed in the third Library Publishing Directory, 2016 > 60 libraries are members of the Library Publishing Coalition DEVELOPING BETTER LINKS WITH UNIVERSITY PRESSES AAUP / LPC Cross Pollination Travel Grant Formal cross-institutional collaborations e.g., Project Euclid (Cornell University Libraries and Duke University Press) Emerging ARL/AAUP initiatives around, e.g., open access monographs, P2L meeting in Philadelphia (May 9-10) Broader Collaboration across Campuses

Three Reasons Why Press/Library Partnerships Make Sense

Sociopolitical Advantage UNIVERSITY PRESS Becomes more central to campus organizationally (sometimes also physically). Learns from other information professionals. Has a voice in the library community to promote appreciation of publishing value-add. LIBRARY Gains more understanding of faculty as authors, not just users, of information. Becomes therefore more credible in supporting them around data, OA, rights, etc. Has a voice in the publishing community to advocate for change.

Degree of institutional (vs. disciplinary) focus Degree of formal publishing intervention

Michigan Publishing Services (MPS) BOOKS JOURNALS DATABASES

Economic Advantage UNIVERSITY PRESS Spreads overhead costs to achieve more financial security. Has some budget protection thanks to a larger parent. Better understands its key customer, libraries. LIBRARY Acquires a channel for earned revenue. Learns more about publishing costs to inform negotiations. Gains insights into its suppliers.

- within institution $3.5 m in sales revenue pa. $1 m in University support pa. < 2% of Library budget but other in- kind support from Library, e.g., space, IT, HR

- across institutions Agnes Scott Allegheny Amherst Atlanta Univ Ctr Bard Bates Berea Bowdoin Carleton Claremont Colleges Coe College of St. Benedict/St. John’s Denison University Earlham Furman University Grinnell Hamilton Haverford Kenyon St. Lawrence Knox Lafayette Lake Forest Macalester Middlebury Oberlin Rollins Sewanee Skidmore Smith St. Olaf Swarthmore Trinity University Union Ursinus Vassar Washington & Lee Whitman Williams College of Wooster

Technological Advantage UNIVERSITY PRESS Gains access to electronic infrastructure such as the repositories. Learns digital skills and has expert support, e.g., in metadata, visualization. Can more fully participate in larger initiatives, e.g., DataCite, ORCID. LIBRARY Learns publishing workflows and processes. Rejuvenates repositories by reconceptualizing them as publishing platforms. Gains access to the information supply chain as a producer not just consumer of content.

Just Good Friends... When the university budgeting regime does not permit in-kind support When there is a lack of mutual respect or understanding When library technology resources are understaffed
