Recognise basic woodworking joints

1 Can you name and state a use for these joints? These are angled butt joints, which can be used for the simple jointing of boxes and frames.

2 Recognise basic woodworking joints Can you name and state a use for these joints? These are through housing joints, which have a variety of uses, ranging from stud partitions and stairs to fixed shelving and intermediate standards in cabinet carcasses.

The edges of these boards for a solid table top are simply butted and glued. Why do the heart sides alternate from face to face? When using tangential sawn timber, the heart sides should alternate from face to face in adjacent boards to minimise the effect of distortion. 3 Recognise basic woodworking joints

4 Can you name and describe these joints? These are bridle joints. They are a form of mortise and tenon, traditionally used for jointing heavy timber frames and roof trusses and now used for light framing in joinery and cabinetwork.

5 Recognise basic woodworking joints Can you name and describe these joints: These are dowels joints, which provide a simple method of joining solid timber framework and board material for the construction of cabinets and similar. They are, in effect, a butt joint that has been reinforced with small wooden pegs, glued into holes drilled into both parts being jointed.

6 Recognise basic woodworking joints Can you name and state a use for this joint? This is a barefaced housing joint, which is often used for joining door linings.

7 Recognise basic woodworking joints Can you name and state a use for these joints? These are dovetail joints, which are used mainly in box and drawer construction. Through dovetails are used for boxes and backs of drawers. Lapped dovetails may be used on the front of drawers, for a neater finished appearance.

8 Recognise basic woodworking joints Can you name and state a use for these joints? These are mitred butt joints, which are being secured with nails and are commonly used for skirting, architrave and other trim intersections.

9 Recognise basic woodworking joints Can you name and state a use for these joints? These are all types of halving joint, where half of the timber is cut from each piece at the point of intersection. They can be used for constructing flat frames and jointing wall plates.

Can you name and state a use for these joints? These are scarf halving joints, which are used for lengthening structural timber, typically wall plates where the joint is supported throughout its length. Nails or screws are used to secure the joint. The bevelled scarf joint is an improvement as it will resist pulling stresses. 10 Recognise basic woodworking joints

11 Recognise basic woodworking joints Can you name and state a use for this joint? This is a mortise and tenon joint, which is used extensively in door and window construction and general framework in a variety of forms.
