Join the conversation! Our Twitter hashtag is #CPI2011. What Is The Hook? Why are we here talking about shared leadership?

What Is The Hook? My journey to improve our clinic has led me to this simple conclusion: I can not do this on my own!!! The model of the “heroic leader” does not apply to our process of transforming into a PCMH. Has anyone else had that experience?

Learning Objectives: Describe shared leadership Describe the benefits and limitations of shared leadership Discuss three strategies to foster shared leadership Formulate new site specific strategies to foster shared leadership Develop one plan to foster shared leadership in your own clinic

Wassily Kandinsky, Composition VII, 1913

Questions about Shared Leadership Why do you want to think about or learn about shared leadership? Why do you want to foster shared leadership in your clinic? What does shared leadership mean to you? What are the necessary ingredients?

Define Shared Leadership

“a relational, collaborative leadership process or phenomenon involving teams or groups that mutually influence one another and collectively share duties and responsibilities otherwise relegated to a single, central leader.” –Kocolowski, Shared Leadership: Is it Time for a Change? Emerging Leadership Journeys, Vol. 3 Iss. 1, 2010, pp

Define shared leadership: Kandinsky, The Blue Rider 1903

The Necessary Ingredients: Team environment of: –Shared purpose or goal / Ownership –Social/emotional support for participants –Voice given to all team members/equity –Joint completion of tasks/partnership –Mutual skill development –Responsibility and Accountability Kocolowski, Shared Leadership: Is it Time for a Change? Emerging Leadership Journeys, Vol. 3 Iss. 1, 2010, pp
