Presentation transcript:

Recap where hydro-meteorological and Geophysical hazards occur Hydro-meteorological hot spots Southern, Eastern and South East Asia, in addition to Central America and eastern parts of South America. Central Africa is largely affected by droughts Geophysical hot spots Largely exposed to those areas that suffer hydro- meteorological aswell The Himalayan region, Japan and parts of the Middle East and Southern Europe exposed to multiple hazards

Learning Objectives K- Know how risky Britain is to live because of Global warming U- Understand how our local area may be affected by GW and other hazards S-Be able to interpret UK environment flood maps

We have already looked at how Global Warming may impact the world but what about directly the UK? Watch the following explanation and list as many effects of Global warming in the UK on your worksheet. Reminder- Sir click on the interactive content part on the left!!: Read the hand out “Climate change and effects on Britain” and complete 1 st box on your worksheet. Now read the booklet Top 100 effects of Global warming booklet and identify which ones could effect Britain- some amazing facts in this! Add these to your table.

Impacts in UK Health Impacts Cold-related winter deaths are likely to decline substantially - possibly by as much as 20,000 per year. Heat-related summer deaths are likely to increase to around 2800 per year Cases of food poisoning are likely to increase by about 10,000 cases per year Vector-borne and water-borne diseases may increase but their impact is likely to be small Indigenous malaria could re-establish by 2050 The risk of major disasters caused by gales and coastal flooding is likely to increase significantly Effects of air pollutants on health are likely to decline, but effects of summer ozone may increase

What about the effects on an even more local scale? Now from the booklet how many of the “Top 100 effects of Global warming” could effect the North East? Add these to your 2 nd table on your worksheet Have a look at how the UK Environment agency perceives our area in terms of risk of floods! Scary!!!!!

What about the effects on an even more local scale? Have a look at how the UK Environment agency perceives our area in terms of risk of floods! Scary!!!!! Blue shaded areas are deemed at risk of floods!

What about the effects on an even more local scale? You can zoom in even closer and get an update on risk of your area Is Walker safe or at risk?? Try this website out for yourselves

Homework Try this website out for yourselves Come up with 3 areas in Newcastle area that are at significant risk of flooding!

To end- true or false? Species Disappear The latest report from the World Conservation Union says that a minimum of 40 percent of the world’s species are being threatened... and global warming’s one of the main culprits. Britain to Disappear The latest report from the UK environment agency is that Britain within 25 years will be completely submerged due to increasing sea levels Malaria Spreading in Russia Russians found larvae of the anopheles mosquito, the malaria carrier, for the first time in Moscow last September. Suddenly Vanishing Lakes What happened to the five-acre glacial lake in Southern Chile? In March, it was there. In May, it was... gone. Scientists blame global warming. The only one that was false was Britain to disappear all the rest are true!
