Reflective Leadership ‘Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action’ Peter Drucker
My Story
What is Reflective Leadership? Self Awareness - knowledge of self (in the moment and in the past) Observation - own behaviours and effect upon others Flexibility - ability to respond and interact with others
What Affects Our Ability to Reflect? Time pressures Crisis – personal, professional or way of being Not considering it a priority Fear Fatigue Don’t know how
Self Awareness Exercise Think about the day you had yesterday. What happened? Who did you interact with? How did you feel?
Self Awareness Exercise Choose an object that represents how you felt yesterday Find a partner and share why you chose the object and how it represents your feelings *You will not have to share this with the larger group
Observation Exercise – ‘Lost At Sea’ Role Play
Observation Exercise Questions: How did it feel doing the role play? What did you notice about yourself? What did you notice about others? How does this exercise relate to diversity and inclusion in the workplace?
How to Be More Reflective Pay attention to own feelings and reactions Watch and listen Rest – sleep and time off Take regular breaks Talk to people you trust Write in a journal
Benefits of Reflection as Leaders? Higher Emotional Intelligence – leader and team Better decision making Better organizational culture Increased creativity Higher quality work Better mental and physical health
