Aeneid Book 2 By: Grace Anderson & Ashley Llewellyn

Introduction ❏ Aeneas is telling his story to Dido about the downfall of Troy. ❏ Aeneas describes the war as “an unspeakable grief.” ❏ Shows that this is painful for Aeneas to talk about. ❏ Where is Dido the queen of?

The Trojan Horse ❏ Built by the leaders of the Greeks (Ulysses). ❏ The Greeks hide on the island of Tenedos while a few soldiers hide inside the horse. ❏ Some of the Trojans want to bring it into the citadel while others want to get rid of it. ❏ Laocoon rushes from the citadel, says the horse is treacherous and that the Trojans shouldn’t trust it. ❏ What does Laocoon hurl at the horse?

Sinon’s Tale ❏ Sinon claims that the Greeks wish to flee Troy, but are being prevented by the weather. ❏ A prophet told the Greeks to sacrifice one of their own, and they chose Sinon. ❏ Sinon escapes during the preparations and is begging the Trojans to spare him. ❏ Trojans pity him because of his sad tale & ask what the meaning of the horse is ❏ Sinon says the horse is an offering to the goddess Minerva and if harm comes to the horse, Minerva will destroy Troy. ❏ If, however, the Trojans take the horse into the city, they will be successful. ❏ Who is Sinon related to?

Laocoon ❏ Two giant serpents rise out of the water and destroy Laocoon and his two sons. ❏ The Trojans see this as punishment for hurling a spear at the horse. ❏ The Trojans move the horse to the shrine of Minerva to appease her. ❏ The horse is now inside the city walls.

Night Falls ❏ Sinon opens the horse to release the Greeks. ❏ The Greek warriors kill the Trojan guards and open the gates of the city to the rest of their forces (previously on Tenedos). ❏ Aeneas and his men surprise and kill many of the Greeks, through instruction from a dream. ❏ Who appears to Aeneas in a dream to inform him of the attack on Troy and instruct him on what to do?

Aeneas Sees Helen ❏ Aeneas sees Helen hiding. ❏ He is overwhelmed with anger and disgust and wants to kill her, because he believes she caused the war. ❏ However, Venus appears to him and explains that the gods caused the war, not Helen. ❏ Venus is Aeneas’ mother. Who is his father?

Aeneas Leaves Troy ❏ Venus advises Aeneas to leave Troy, since his fate is elsewhere. ❏ Aeneas goes to fetch Anchises, Ascanius, and Creusa. ❏ Anchises refuses to leave his home and city. ❏ 2 omens appear: a harmless tongue of flame on Ascanius’ forehead and then a bright falling star in the city. ❏ Anchises is persuaded to leave.

The Loss of Creusa ❏ Aeneas carries Anchises and their household gods while Creusa follows. ❏ Creusa is lost in the crowd and dies. ❏ Aeneas sees her shade or spirit. ❏ She tells him not to be sorrowful because a new home & wife await him in Hesperia. ❏ Aeneas leaves Troy burning and leads the survivors. ❏ Who is Creusa? Who is his second wife?
