Class/Homework Tuesday (9/28) u Pgs. u Pgs. 9-11: 26, 38, 40, 50, 58, and 66 u (can u (can continue on classwork paper, but label clearly ! )  (You  (You may do any of the odd numbered problems, if if you want extra practice and check them on Pg. SA-1 and 2.)

Pgs. 9-11: 26, 38, 40, 50, 58, and 66 u 26. The product of 9 and 7 is 63. u 38. A x 9 = 171 u u = 12

1.3 “Powers Exponents” 1.3 “Powers and Exponents” ä What is the area of a square that is 2 units long on each side? ä 4 square units

1.3 “Powers Exponents” 1.3 “Powers and Exponents” ä Goal 1 -You should review or learn how to evaluate powers. ä Goal 1 - You should review or learn how to evaluate powers.  The squares on the next slide have sides whose length are 1, 2, 3, and 4.  The area of the squares can be writ- ten as products, such as 4 x 4 = 16,  or as powers, such as 4 2.

Using Powers ä 1 x 1 2 x 2 3 x 3 4 x 4  1 2 = 1  2 2 = 4  3 2 = 9  4 2 = 16  A power has two parts; a exponent and a base.  4 2  For 4 2, the base is 4 and the exponent is 2.

Example 1 Reading Powers  Power: 5 2 Meaning: 5 x 5 Verbal Description: 5 to the second power, or 5 squared  Power: 5 2 ; Meaning: 5 x 5; Verbal Description: 5 to the second power, or 5 squared.  Power: 10 3 Meaning: 10 x 10 x 10 Verbal Description: 10 to the third power, or 10 cubed  Power: 10 3 ; Meaning: 10 x 10 x 10; Verbal Description: 10 to the third power, or 10 cubed.  Power: 7 4 Meaning: 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 Verbal Description: 7 to the fourth power  Power: 7 4 ; Meaning: 7 x 7 x 7 x 7; Verbal Description: 7 to the fourth power.

Example 2 Using a Calculator to Find Powers ä Use a calculator to evaluate the power.  a Solution ä Calculator Written Steps Display Results ä = 2209  b. 6 5 Solution ä Calculator Written Steps Display Results ä = 7776 x 2x 2x 2x y xy xy xy x = You should have a calculator that will do these functions + other!

Example 2 Using a Calculator to Find Powers ä Use a calculator to evaluate the power.  c. ( 4.2) 3 Solution ä Calculator Written Steps Display Results ä (4.2) 3 = ä Are there any questions about “Using Powers”? y xy xy xy x =

1.3 “Powers Exponents” 1.3 “Powers and Exponents” ä Goal 2 -You should review or learn how to use powers to find area and volume. ä Goal 2 - You should review or learn how to use powers to find area and volume. ä Exponents can be used to express the area of a square and the volume of a cube.

Square and Cube u SquareCube  Area A = s2s2 Volume V = s3s3 s s s s

Example 3 - Finding the Area of a Square u A baseball diamond is being fertilized. Each bag of fertilizer covers 1200 square feet of grass. u About how many bags of fertilizer are needed? 90 ft 90 ft

SolutionSolution u Find the area of the square field. A A = s s 2 Area of a square.  = Substitute 90 for s.s.s.s.  = 8100 ft 2 Evaluate Power.

SolutionSolution u Divide the area by the number of square feet that one bag covers.  8100  1200 = 6.75  Answer: About 7 bags of fertilizer are needed.

Example 4 - Finding the Volume of a Cube u A 12 inch by 12 inch by 12 inch box is to be filled with small green cubes measuring 2 inches on a side. u How many small cubes fill the box?

SolutionSolution u Find the volume of the box. uV uV = s s 3 = = 1728 in. 3 u Find the volume of a green cube. uV uV = s s 3 = = 8 in. 3

SolutionSolution u Divide the volume of the box by the volume of a green cube.  1728  8 = 216  Answer: u You can fit 216 cubes inside the box.
