“ For I have been told by the word of the LORD, 'You shall not eat bread nor drink water there, nor return by going the way you came. He said to him, "I too am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, 'Bring him back with you to your house, that he may eat bread and drink water.'" (He was lying to him.) ” 1 Kings 13:17,18

“ But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!” 2 Timothy 3:1-5

“ For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith; but they will progress no further, for their folly will be manifest to all, as theirs also was.” 2 Timothy 3:6-9

1 John 4:1 “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” False - pretended, impostor

C HARACTER AND M OTIVE OF T EACHER ? Not determined by motive of teacher. - Philippians 1:15-18 Motive Wrong - Teaching right. Galatians 1:13-14; Acts 23:1; 26:9; 1 Timothy 1:13 -Motive Right - Teaching wrong.

C ONTRARY TO T RUTH ! 2 Peter 2:1-2 —Promotes destructive heresies- opposes truth. Romans 16:17 —Cause division/stumbling contrary to doctrine learned. 1 Timothy 1:3,10-11 —Another doctrine, contrary to sound doctrine. Galatians 1:6-9 — Contrary doctrine prohibited (even though teacher is an angel or apostle) – (2:11-14) NOTE : Human tradition determined by teaching, not by moral character or motive.

Galatians 1:6,7 “ I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.”

Galatians 1:8,9 “ But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.”

 Pervert - μεταστρ έ φω, metastrephō - "to transform into something of an opposite character"— Vine's Exp. Dict.  Must question and change the meaning of words – ( for; everlasting; became flesh )  Must stretch and distort the context of Scripture – (2 Peter 3:16)  There are difficult passages, but the truth always fits w/truth.

 You can get more people that way ! – (2 Timothy 4:3)  Stressing emotion rather than truth – attempting to stimulate themselves through vain worship and externals - (Proverbs 14:12; Jeremiah 10:23; Matthew 15:7-9)  A positive-emotional-feel good type of preaching – (Jere. 23:14,17; 1 Cor. 2:1-5; 2 Tim. 4:3,4)

Different beliefs Different doctrines Different practices Different churches

Truth Is Not Desired “Who say to the seers, "Do not see," and to the prophets, "Do not prophesy to us right things; Speak to us smooth things, prophesy deceits. Get out of the way, turn aside from the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.” Isaiah 30:10,11

Truth Is Not Desired “An astonishing and horrible thing has been committed in the land: The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule by their own power; and My people love to have it so. But what will you do in the end?” Jeremiah 5:30,31

Truth Is Not Desired “And with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie.” 2 Thessalonians 2:10,11

 The spirit of compromise – 2 Kings 17:41; 18:21; Rev. 3:16; Matt. 6:24  Selective acceptance of scripture and Exsegesis – Psalm 119:160; Prov. 30:5; Matt. 15:6-9; Deut. 4:2; Rev. 22:18  The selective rejection of context and other scripture – Rom. 2:17- 24; Jam. 2:8-11; Matt. 23:23; 2 Tim. 3:16 D UE T O D ILUTION

 To defend error, one MUST pervert or twist scripture – 2 Peter 2:1-3; 3:16; Psalm 56:5; Acts 13:10; 1 Tim. 4:1-3  Error contradicts both truth & error – BUT, truth never contradicts itself ! D UE T O P ERVERSION

 When arguments cannot be sustained in the face of truth – numerous ungodly characteristics are usually manifested  “Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death.” M ISREPRESENTATION Matthew 26:59

Where in Corinthians,..., does Paul disfellowship, [sic] the Corinthians or tell them he is going to over their failure of "getting it"? The fact of the matter is there is no congregation among the Churches of Christ that I am aware of (including Highland and Woodmont Hills) that is as messed up as Corinth. Paul excludes the immoral... and this is a process that occurred [sic] for several years. At the end of the century when Clement of Rome writes to the Corinthian church... they are STILL having [sic] issues. Shalom, Bobby Valentine Milwaukee, Would Paul have continued to fellowship them if they had refused to comply with his instructions??? Apostasy Demands a Change in the Application of Scripture

1) The Corinthian church was in absolute chaos... ethically and doctrinally 2) There is only one person disfellowshipped by Paul in that Corinthian congregation, and it was not over doctrinal reasons 3) The TRUTH is that in chapter 8 we have folks who were "unclear" to say the least on the doctrine of monothesism (i.e., ONLY ONE GOD), and yet Paul did not write a chapter on the folly or ignorance of paganism. Rather, he chastised those who "knew the TRUTH of the matter" for destroying one Christ died for. Thus Paul fellowshipped those who believed idols were "real." This is amazing. Bobby Valentine Milwaukee, WI Would Paul have continued to fellowship them if they refused to comply with his instructions??? Apostasy Demands a Change in the Application of Scripture

2 John 9-11 “ Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.”
