Human Geography Historically a patchwork of small kingdoms Portugal, Britain and others colonized the area and grew spices, tea, and used up raw materials Many borders where created by Europeans uniting tribes, sultans, and islanders into Indonesia, Malaysia, Borneo, etc.

Independence Movements Philippines gained independence in 1946 from the USA Britain granted independence to Myanmar in 1948, Malaysia and Singapore in the 1960’s, and Indonesia in 1946 France and Indochina struggled with each other causing unrest in Vietnam (1954), Laos, and Cambodia(1953)
