Is Monsanto Sustainable? David M. Boje February

What Monsanto says: “Monsanto is a sustainable agriculture company. We deliver agricultural products that support farmers all around the world. We are focused on empowering farmers—large and small—to produce more from their land while conserving more of our world’s natural resources such as water and energy. We do this with our leading seed brands in crops like corn, cotton, oilseeds and fruits and vegetables” (Monsanto.com).

Monsanto’s Linear Narrative Monsanto has a linear ‘fractal narrative’ of feeding the word with GMO products, on land treated with Roundup, buying up competing seed suppliers, getting executives into key government agency positions, in- order-to pass trade standards enforced by WTO that make farmers pay tariffs to Monsanto, when GMO seeds drift onto their lands. Video YouTubeVideo YouTube on ROUNDUP

Monsanto GMO corm Three of Monanto’s GMO corn products produce side effects in their consumption: “researchers from CRIIGEN and the French universities of Caen and Rouen have highlighted a number of new side effects linked with their consumption. Their study of Monsanto's 90-day feeding trials clearly underlines adverse impacts on kidneys and liver, the dietary detoxifying organs, as well as damage to the heart, adrenal glands, spleen and haematopoietic system” (2010 Organic Consumer).

Monsanto and Roundup Monsanto worked on the USDA bureaucrats (some former Monsanto executives) to “conditional deregulate’ Monsanto GE herbicide-resistant alfalfa, despite Swedish scientists findings that spraying Roundup doubles risks of cancer to farmworkers. Professor Andres Carrasco’s research found that very small amounts of glyphosate causes damage to frog embryos, and is a possible reason for human birth defects in farming communities. Glyphosate is applied by Monsanto in the process of making the GM soybean.

Monsaonto and cancer Monsanto's genetically modified corn or exposed to its top-selling weed killer, as the rats fed on it, suffered tumors and multiple organ damage (Hirschler & Kelland, 2012). The reported cases of cancer, respiratory diseases and other malformations is countered by political persuasion to not challenge Monsanto’s tax-levying powers on local formers, putting economic growth ahead of farmworker and consumer health.

Monsanto and Thiram There is hope. Haitian farmers are burning tomato seeds that Monsanto donated to the farmers (Bell, 2010). The seeds are treated with thiram, a chemical the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency determined gave mice cancer growths. Agricultural workers must wear special protective clothing in handling the seeds. EPA banned home gardeners from using thiram coated toxic seeds.
