How did Red Rocks form? Millions of years ago their was a smaller version of the rocky mountains. As they started to erode they deposited the sediments into a nearby valley. Over time the minerals pushed and buried into the ground. When the current day Rocky Mountains start to uplift through the ground it pushed out the hardened sediment, which today is called Red Rocks. Differential Weathering The black circle is showing the minerals that are harder, more compressed, and are more resistant to the environment. The red circle is showing the minerals that are softer and weather very quickly. Wikipedia. "Red Rocks Park - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia." Wikipedi a, the free encyclopedia. N.p., n.d. Chemical Weathering What makes the Red Rocks red? The key “ingredient” to red rocks make up is sandstone. These rocks contain iron, when rain falls onto the rock it absorbs the rain. When this happens the water and iron mix to form the rusty red we see on the rocks at red rocks.
Mechanical Weathering Mechanical rock is the break down rock without changing its mineral composition. Frost Wedging: Water works it’s way into cracks in rocks and when it freezes it expands. Making the rocks crack grow bigger and longer over time. As you can see this large crack has continuously gotten bigger, and broken off other pieces because of water freezing and expanding inside it. Root Wedging: Plants grow into cracks in the rocks and break down the rock into smaller pieces. As you can see in my picture this bush has grown through a crack and is slowly growing and breaking up the rock with its roots. Google. The impacts of the Biosphere The biosphere is the layer where all things live and grow. Biosphere literally meaning, “The regions of the surface and atmosphere of the earth or other planets occupied by living organisms.” As the plants roots move their way through cracks in the rocks they slowly start to break the entire rock down. This is also called root wedging. As shown in my picture the root normally start off in the smallest crack and as the plant grows, so does the crack. " Red Rocks Park." The Lithosphere Impacts The Lithosphere also known as the Atmosphere is the layer where the continental and oceanic plates are. When the plates moved and hit one another, one was pushed on top of the other plate. This uplifted the current Rocky Mountains, and the sediment of rocks we call Red Rocks. "DotNetNuke." DotNetNuke. Hydrosphere Impacts The Hydrosphere is the layer that includes all oceans, lakes, streams, an wet lands. The energy from the sun(light and heat) causes evaporation from all wet surfaces on earth. When the clouds in take this precipitation its later released. When the rain falls on the rocks the rocks yet again absorb the water. This then makes the water and iron mix to make the rusty red color of the rocks. The hydrosphere impacts red rocks by helping it give the rocks their color. My picture shows where the run off flows down the rocks after it rains. Thus this is demonstrating the hydrologic cycle. Wikipedia. "Hydrosphere - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia." The History of Red Rocks Before John Brisben bought Red Rocks in 1906, it was called Garden of the Angels, but was then renamed to Garden of the Titans. Tourists would take the railroad up to Morrison and then walk west to red rocks. Then they had the option of walking or riding donkeys up to the natural amphitheatre. Red Rocks Park was officially bought in 1928 by the city of Denver. For 84 years it has been going strong, and has had some of the top names in music perform there. Geological Time Red rocks has been around for 160 million years! This is apart of the Jurassic time. During this time Pangaea was starting to split into different continents. The movement of the plates resulted in Red Rocks being uplifted from the ocean floor.
