- Gospel contrasts sharply with the synoptic gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke -Written for Jewish-Christians who were expelled from synagogues after the Roman Revolt -Written to strengthen faith and win converts These goals lead to eternal life Background

Purposes of Gospel: 1.) THE Passion Narrative and Last week of Jesus’ Life 2.) Christ is the Past, Present and Future of the WORLD!

Background - John’s gospel is very poetic, philosophical (SOARS ABOVE like the SYMBOL of JOHN, the eagle.) Presents a more solemn and holy Jesus - Uses literary techniques such as irony and figurative language to help clarify the misunderstandings people had of him

1.) “THE WORD BECAME FLESH” JOHN 1:14 2.) JESUS IS THE WORD, LIGHT, BREAD, LIFE, DOOR, WAY, SHEPHARD SYMBOLS, SYMBOLS, SYMBOLS Background THE WORD:

Themes - The first 18 verses of John’s Gospel serve as a prologue to the gospel. - There, he introduces three theological themes of the gospel: 1.) Christology From Above 2.) Major Conflicts 3.) Who is Jesus?

Themes Theme: Who is Jesus? - The prologue and chapter one use various titles to reveal who Jesus is Word of God, Son of God, Christ, Son of Man Because He is God, no one title totally describes him

JOHN chapters Almost 50% of the entire Gospel is the last week of Jesus’ Life. HOLY WEEK begins on PALM SUNDAY THE LAST WEEK

JERUSALEM BIG CITY with ROMANS & JEWISH AUTHORITIES TIME OF PASSOVER: CITY IS PACKED WITH PEOPLE (perhaps 300,000 people) WHOLE CITY IS ON EDGE AS BIG CROWDS, WITH BIG CELEBRATION MEANS BIG PROBLEMS

Day 1: Jesus’ Welcome Party NO Quiet entrance! Great crowd goes out to MEET the mystery MAN and throws a BIG PARTY! TENSION increases MORE!!! Word gets to Roman & Jewish Authorities! PLOTS begin PALM SUNDAY

Monday Day 2: Jesus Flips OUT Goes to THE TEMPLE and drives out the money changers and merchants Really the only time Jesus is Violent. You have turned the Temple into a den of thieves JESUS goes OFF

PLOTS BEGIN Day 3: Tuesday After ALL Jesus has done out in the COUNTRY prior to his arrival in Jerusalem, the Temple incident is the last straw! High Jewish Officials plot to arrest him, but HOW and WHAT charge? WE don’t want a RIOT!

Jesus Predicts Death Tuesday: I am going to DIE Jesus speaks that he is to die and will rise again in 3 days! It is with some resignation and inevitability that he speaks this way! How am I going to DIE? THEME OF BETRAYAL!!!

Day 4: The PLOT thickens; Theme of Betrayal JUDAS THE BETRAYER SATAN (HUGE POINT) enters Judas and he goes to the Jewish Chief Priests to betray Jesus. They are happy and offer MONEY for his betrayal! Betrayal without any crowds!!! SPY WEDNESDAY

Plot Develops Judas: I know where Jesus is and will be. ONE of the 12! ALL 12 will Betray Jesus! Point then to ALL disciples. How do we betray Jesus and his message. Do we stand up and against injustice, violence, etc.

Maundy Thursday Day full of Drama! Day 5 Jesus sends 2 disciples ahead to find a room for the Passover meal. Judas is NOT one of them? WHY? Jesus is aware that things are getting worse! FINAL MEAL TOGETHER!

LAST SUPPER 4 Critical Elements 1.Share the meal together 2.Washing of the disciples feet 3.Theme of Betrayal 4.Eucharistic Fellowship

LAST SUPPER 1. Shared Meal Part of Jesus’ Public Ministry: often criticized with whom he eats with (inclusivity) Real Food (survive): Bread! “Give us this day our Daily Bread”

LAST SUPPER 2. Washing Feet (dirty feet from the walk) Humility: acts of service Peter’s response? Washing away of SIN so that we are right with God (life long process)

LAST SUPPER 3.Betrayal “One of you will betray me” Exact Moment portrayed by Da Vinci “Last Supper”

LAST SUPPER 3.Betrayal Jesus tells them it is Judas but they do not understand! Jesus dialogue with Satan? “Do quickly what you are going to do?”

LAST SUPPER MY Body & Blood Do THIS in Memory of ME Bread: blesses it, this is my body! Wine: this is my blood, poured out for many!

LAST SUPPER MY Body & Blood Do THIS in Memory of ME ALL PARTAKE! FULL PARTICIPATION WITH JESUS AND THE EUCHARIST IS BORN! PATH to NEW LIFE!

LIFE with CHRIST

Final Discourse John: Do not be troubled I have prepared a place for you I am the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE Love as I have Loved You Help from the Holy Spirit See ME Soon; Prays for Disciples Eternal life is God in Jesus Christ

THE Passion of Christ -Passio=Greek word for suffering -Jesus’ Passion is the story of his suffering. Begins in the Garden of Gethsemane and Ends with his Death! THE PASSION BEGINS: Good Friday: Day 6

SEQUENCE: -AGONY IN THE GARDEN -BETRAYAL -ARREST -TRIAL(S) 2 -TORTURE -DEATH MARCH -CRUCIFIXION -DEATH THE PASSION

SEQUENCE: -AGONY IN THE GARDEN -BETRAYAL -ARREST -TRIAL(S) -TORTURE -DEATH MARCH -CRUCIFIXION -DEATH Mel Gibson’s Passio

Passion of Christ How long? Late Thursday evening til Friday afternoon. Perhaps hours at the most! FAST MOVING EVENTS! THE PASSION

Right after the Last Supper, it is late, the group (less Judas) go out to Mount Olives. Outside the City gates, away from the crowds. Perfect time & place to be arrested! THE PASSION

The Agony in the Garden (Gethsemane) Jesus is so terrified he is sweating blood! Confronts the ultimate in terror! What awaits! Not MY will Father but YOURS be done! THE PASSION

Jesus betrayed with a Kiss! ALL the Disciples Flee(abandon Jesus) because they are scarred! THE PASSION

Trial #1 Jewish Before the Great Sanhedrin (jewish supreme court) 1 Question to be asked? ARE YOU HIM? THE PASSION

YES! I AM THE MESSIAH BLASPHEMY!!!! THE PASSION

Peter (Apostle #1) denies Jesus 3X Now, why don’t Jews just do away with Jesus themselves?? THE PASSION

THE ROMANS! Trial #2 Go to Pontius Pilate with the charge of blasphemy? Pilate could care less! THE PASSION

Blasphemy is a religious crime. Pilate could care less. Begins to question Jesus? Goes before the Crowds THE PASSION

Pilate knows Jesus is innocent, however the crowds want blood! Worried about riots!CRUCIFY HIM THE PASSION

Pilate chooses to let the crowds decide! “Pulls a Pilate” by washing his hands of Jesus TakesNO Responsibility THE PASSION

Romans are trained to kill. Crucifixion is for the ultimate losers! Public, cruel and lengthy humiliation! Crowds choose this! THE PASSION

THE CONDEMNATION OF JESUS BEGINS THE ANCIENT PRACTICE OF THE “STATIONS OF THE CROSS” IN essence it is a story within a story Stations of the Cross within the Passion Narrative

Holy Saturday Day 7  Day of Rest!!!  Jesus rested in his tomb  Contemplate life without Jesus or God

Part Two: Resurrection of Jesus - Collectively the gospels give us 14 stories that describe the resurrection - All gospels proclaim the resurrection was a real event, with historically verifiable elements - Differ to the point that it is impossible to blend them into one narrative Book of Glory

All Gospels agree: - Resurrection took place early in the morning on the first day of the week - Women were present at the tomb, most certainly Mary Magdalene - Stone had been rolled away and tomb was empty - Messenger(s) were at the tomb Book of Glory

- Jesus only appeared to his disciples - They were slow to recognize him because: They were not expecting the Lord to come back to life Jesus’ resurrected body shone with glory of God’s life He was not a ghost -Jesus prepared his disciples for his ascension and the descent of the Spirit Book of Glory

Essential beliefs about Resurrection 1.) Proves Jesus’ claims to be God’s Son Confirms Jesus’ works and teachings Fulfills OT promises Proves Jesus’ divinity 2.) Accomplished our salvation Proves Jesus conquered sin and death Book of Glory

3.) Gives us new life, justifies us in God’s grace, and adopts us into the divine family Resurrection allows Jesus to live in us so we already share eternal life 4.) If we join ourselves to the Risen Lord and live according to his message of love, we will also share in our own final resurrection at the end of time
