Tissue I don’t mean Kleenex

Within multicellular organisms, tissues are organized communities of cells that work together to carry out a specific function. The exact role of a tissue in an organism depends on what types of cells it contains.

4 Types of Tissue Connective Muscular Nervous Epithelial

Connective Tissue As the name implies, connective tissue serves a “connecting” function It supports and binds other tissues in the body There are 3 types of connective tissue

1.Loose Connective….In vertebrates. Most common.Holds organs in place Three types Collagenous…made of collagen Elastic…are stretchable Reticular Fibers…join connective tissues to other tissues 2. Dense Connective….Dense or fibrous.Found in tendons and ligaments..Helps attach muscles to bones. Links bones together at join ts

3. Specialized Connective Tissue 4 types Adipose…stores fat. lines organs and body cavities. protects organs. insulates the body against heat loss. produces hormones Cartilage…provides flexible support.nose, trachea and ears Bone…mineralized connective tissue. collagen.calcium phosphate gives bones firmness

Blood…is a type of connective tissue. different function compared to the other CT. as an extracellular matrix. matrix consists of plasma. red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets are suspended in the plasma

Muscular Tissue Muscle tissue is made of "excitable" cells that are capable of contraction. Of all of the different tissue types, muscle tissue is the most abundant in most animals. muscle tissue 3 types

Muscular Tissue 1. Cardiac muscle….found in the heart.cells are joined in a way that allows for the heart beat. is branched striated muscle 2.Skeletal muscle….is attached to bones by tendons. associated with the body’s voluntary movements. striated muscle

3. Smooth or Visceral Muscle…. found in various parts of the body. arteries, bladder, digestive tract. contracts slower than skeletal muscle but for a longer period of time. does not have cross striations

Nervous Tissue. found in the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. responsible for coordinating and controlling many body activities. stimulates muscle contraction. creates an awareness of the environment. plays a major role in emotions, memory, and reasoning. To do all these things, cells in nervous tissue need to be able to communicate with each other by way of electrical nerve impulses. The cells in nervous tissue that generate and conduct impulses are called neurons or nerve cells. neurons

Nervous Tissue Nervous tissue is responsible for sensing stimuli and transmitting signals to and from different parts of an organism. Neurons are the basic unit of nervous tissue. Neurons

Neurons 2 major parts: 1.Cell Body….central cell body contains the neuron's nucleus. associated cytoplasmcytoplasm. other organelles. organelles 2. Nerve Processes…. are "finger-like" projections from the cell body.conduct and transmit signals. There are two types:.Axons - typically carry signals away from the cell body..Dendrites - typically carry signals toward the cell body.

Epithelial Tissue Cells… overview The cells in epithelial tissue are very closely packed together and joined with little space between them. With its tightly packed structure, we would expect epithelial tissue to serve some type of barrier and protective function and that is certainly the case. For example, the skin is composed of a layer of epithelial tissue (epidermis) that is supported by a layer of connective tissue. It protects the internal structures of the body from damage and dehydration. cellsskinconnective tissue

Epithelial Tissue.Epithelial tissue covers the outside of the body.lines organs, blood vessels and cavities.organs.Epithelial cells form inner tissue lining of organs such as the brain, lungs, skin, and heart.lungsskinheart.free surface of epithelial tissue is usually exposed to fluid or the air.the bottom surface is attached to a basement membrane.

Epithelial tissue…. helps to protect against microorganisms. the skin is the body's first line of defense against bacteria, viruses, andbacteriaviruses other microbes.. functions to absorb, secrete, and excrete substances ** In the intestines, this tissue absorbs nutrients during digestion.digestion. in glands secrete hormones, enzymes, and other substanceshormones. in the kidneys excrete wasteskidneys. in the sweat glands excrete perspiration.. also has a sensory function as it contains sensory nerves in areas suchnerves as the skin, tongue, nose, and ears.ears. Ciliated epithelial tissue can be found in the respiratory tract. Cilia areCilia hair-like protrusions that help propel substances, such as dust particles in the proper direction.
