Working Gender-Related Definitions Sex The biological definition of a person as either female, male, or intersex The social/legal definition of a person as either female, male, or non-conforming; this is how a person feels Gender To whom the person is attracted or seeks to have relationships (other/same/both genders) Sexual Orientation The goal of attaining equal treatment and non-discrimination between males and females on the basis of gender or sex Gender Equality Gender Norms Gender Mainstreaming The ideas about how men and women should look, be, and act in a particular situation or setting

Use gender-sensitive language in all alumni interactions (Chapter bylaws, communications, social media, etc.) During Alumni Chapter elections or for those who have signed up as Country Liaisons, if far fewer women are vying for positions, investigate & develop interventions to encourage alumnae to become involved Gender Mainstreaming Steps - Alumni Consider an individual, organization/cause focused on gender issues as your YALI Dollar Commitment recipient If/when applying for Transformation Fund, provide sex disaggregated data to indicate female beneficiaries, female volunteers, etc. Stand up for someone being stereotyped by their gender Participate in YALI RLC East Africa Alumni Gender Equality Task Force Help encourage women, especially rural women, to consider applying for YALI RLC East Africa

Gender Mainstreaming Steps – YALI RLC East Africa Develop special section under Resources within U-Connect alumni portal dedicated to gender issues In March, special Cohort Communique featuring alumnae, and what all alumni are are doing to advance gender equality Create special discussion group for alumnae in U-Connect portal Use gender-sensitive language in all internal and external communications Maintain sex disaggregated data of Alumni Chapters and Country Liaisons and develop interventions to encourage gender equality in representation of elected officials, volunteers, etc. Develop an alumni Gender Equality Task Force to address issues of gender inequality Work in cooperation with Admissions team to leverage Country Liaisons and Alumni Chapter volunteers to encourage more female applicants to YALI RLC East Africa
