“Assessment Without Levels” Changes to School Reports A Guide for Parents and Carers Didsbury Road Primary School

There have been major changes to the curriculum and assessment processes this year in primary education. Children have worked very hard this year and have made very good progress. The main aim of this presentation is to explain some of the changes which have been made and assure you that the quality of education and learning in our school continues to be outstanding Didsbury Road Primary School

If your child is currently in Year 2 or Year 6 during the academic year: They will have continued to be assessed against National Curriculum levels from the old curriculum. Your child will have completed the End of Key Stage Assessments (SATs) in the same format as previous years. For your end of year report, you will receive a ‘level’ of your child’s attainment. This is the last year that SATS and ‘levels’ will be in this format. Greater Freedom “As part of our reforms to the national curriculum, the current system of ‘levels’ used to report children’s attainment and progress will be removed from September 2014 and will not be replaced. By removing levels we will allow teachers greater flexibility in the way that they plan and assess pupils’ learning. The programmes of study within the new National Curriculum (NC) set out expectations at the end of each key stage, and all maintained schools will be free to develop a curriculum relevant to their pupils that teaches this content. How will this change the assessment and reporting of my child’s attainment? Didsbury Road Primary School

Moving assessment at Didsbury Road Primary School forward With levels now gone, all schools have been given the freedom to select an assessment procedure that works in their school. As a school we must report back on whether a pupil is achieving the expectations for the end of each key stage. At DidsburyRoad we have taken this a step further and have split the national curriculum in to ‘End of Year Expectations’. Didsbury Road Primary School

It is important to note that… the new curriculum is very challenging. The bar has been raised for every year group. to achieve an ‘Expected’ grade in Year 6, researchers and educationalists have compared it to an old level 4A/5C. Previously, a child only had to reach the level 4B to reach National Averages at the end of Key Stage 2. Didsbury Road Primary School

What will this new assessment system look like ? Didsbury Road Primary School

All children at the start of each Year begin at Emerging. As they begin to achieve the objectives for that year, they move towards ‘Meeting’ expectations. This is the desired grade for the end of each academic year, to be ready/prepared for the following Year. Didsbury Road Primary School potential progression throughout the year Emerging is split into 3 parts to aid monitoring progress throughout the early portion of the school year, when the children are beginning their work towards achieving a new set of expectations. Meeting Expectations is the aim for children to achieve by the end of each academic year. V V V For each Year Group, there are a set of ‘Exceeding Expectations’ for children who have met almost all the Year Group expectations, To achieve these ‘Exceeding Expectations’ a child must show that: They make no mistakes They work at a rapid pace They can consistently apply that objective in a range of situations They can apply what they know to other subjects

Each year “meeting” the year group expectations is increasingly difficult So a Year 3 child who is doing well and meeting expectations may well make the following academic progress over 4 years 2015Meeting Y3 expectations 2016Meeting Y4 expectations 2017Meeting Y5 expectations 2018Meeting Y6 expectations This means they have made good progress. Year 1 Writing Expectations As a Year 1 writer: Transcription Spelling I can identify known phonemes in unfamiliar words. I can use syllables to divide words when spelling. I use what I know about alternative phonemes to narrow down possibilities for accurate spelling. I can use the spelling rule for adding ‘s’ or ‘es’ for verbs in the 3 rd person singular. I can name all the letters of the alphabet in order. I can use letter names to show alternative spellings of the same phoneme. Handwriting I can sit correctly at a table, holding a pencil comfortable and correctly. I can form lower case letters in the correct direction, starting and finishing in the right place. I can form capital letters and digits 0-9. Composition I can compose a sentence orally before writing it. I can sequence sentences in chronological order to recount and event or experience. I can re-read what I have written to check that it makes sense. I leave spaces between words. I know how the prefix ‘un’ can be added to words to change meaning. I can use the suffixes ‘s’, ‘es’, ‘ed’, and ‘ing’ within my writing. Grammar and punctuation Sentence structure I can combine words to make a sentence. I can join two sentences using ‘and’. Text structure I can sequence sentences to form a narrative. Punctuation I can separate words using finger spaces. I can use capital letters to start a sentence. I can use a full stop to end a sentence. I can use a question mark. I can use an exclamation mark. I can use capital letters for names. I can use ‘I’. Didsbury Road Primary School

Year 1 Maths Expectations (Consolidated Version) As a Year 1 mathematician: Number I can count reliably to 100. I can count on and back in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s from any given number up to 100. I can write all numbers in words to 20. I can say the number that is one more or one less than a number to 100. I can recall all pairs of addition and subtraction number bonds to 20. I can add and subtract 1-digit and 2-digit numbers to 20, including zero. I know the signs + - =. I can solve a missing number problem. I can solve a one-step problem using addition and subtraction, using concrete objects and pictorial representations. Measurement and geometry I recognise all coins. I recognise and can name the 2D shapes: circle, triangle, square and rectangle. I recognise and can name the 3D shapes: cuboid, pyramid, sphere. How will we report back to parents? In July you will receive your child’s end of year report For Years 1,3,4 and 5 every pupil has a set of ‘End of Year Expectations’ to achieve by the end of this academic year in Reading, Writing and Maths. In your child’s end of year report, you will be given information on whether your child is : Not Yet Meeting ( also known as Emerging) the end of year expectations Meeting the end of year expectations Exceeding the end of year expectations The ultimate aim by the end of Year 6, is for every pupil to be ready for secondary school, by at least achieving the Year 6 expectations.
