Welcome to Creating Your Six-Year Plan Class of 2022

Why does my child need a six year plan? An opportunity to have an overview of your child’s secondary education. Time to plan for taking the required classes and the electives. An opportunity to ask questions and be more informed about your child’s preparation for post secondary education.

What is a six-year plan? A six-year plan is YOUR child’s guide to successful junior high and high school career. It allows YOU to make sure you obtain all the credits you need to graduate. It is also flexible, and may change each year. All the information you need to create a six-year plan is located in the MISD register on the MISD website at

STAAR State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness For High School Credit Courses the Assessment is the End Of Course Exam, or EOC.

ENDORSEMENTS Before a student enters 9 th grade they must choose an Endorsement. This is a requirement for graduation. There are 5 Endorsements you may choose. 1.Arts and Humanities (Art, Music and Florists). 2.Business and Industry (Finance, Accounting). 3.Public Services (Hotel Management, Teaching, Social Worker and Psychology). 4.STEM (Engineering, Computer Science). 5.Multidisciplinary (Combination of classes from the First 4).

PROGRAMS OF STUDY Students will also choose a Program of Study Does NOT exempt students from the required courses for graduation. These courses are electives and will give students a strong foundation in a particular area. EXAMPLES OF PROGRAMS OF STUDY: – Student wants to go to college and study Engineering. This student will take electives related to Engineering. –Students can also take Career & Technology courses (CTE) as Programs of Study. Examples of this include: –Health related careers (nursing) –ROTC –Auto Mechanics –Cosmetology

What is a Pre AP Class? An Advanced Placement (AP) class is a rigorous course that is aligned with College Board’s Standards for College Success. These classes are taken in the 11 th and 12 th grades. A “Pre AP” class is taken in 7 th – 10 th grade and helps a student prepare for an AP class.

How do I Know if my child should take a Pre AP class? MISD has guiding criteria that gives us guidelines to let you know if your child would be prepared to take a Pre AP class. An important component is that the student is willing to attend class every day, do the work required, and ask for help when they don’t understand.

Junior High School AP/Pre-AP Guiding Criteria Pre-AP Social Studies, Science, Math, and/or English: * 7 th grade: 1592 Scale Score on 6 th grade STAAR reading * 7 th grade: 1664 Scale Score on 5 th grade STARR math * 70% PR on the Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test for Students * 90 final average in grade 6 math Foreign Language Guiding Criteria: Pre-qualifying conditions for 7 th graders taking Spanish I: * 1592 Scale Score on 6 th grade STARR reading * 85 in 6 th grade ELA Important Notice: · Prior to taking the course, students and parents at all grade levels will sign an AP/Pre-AP Agreement which explains the rigor and expectations required. · Students at all grade levels must have a 80 average in each AP/Pre-AP course at the end of the first semester to automatically continue in that AP/Pre-AP course for the second semester. · If the student does not have a 80 average, the campus principal may consider extenuating circumstances and allow the student to continue in the course for the second semester on a probationary status

If your student is interested in Pre AP classes: MISD is asking that you conference with your counselor and teacher for guidance. Parents and students sign an enrollment agreement that states that your child will be in the class for at least three weeks before they can change their schedule. This will give your student an opportunity to understand the expectations of the course. Students who are testing for GT placement need to fill out a Pre AP contract as well.

Enrollment Agreement for Junior High School (Grades 7-8) Pre-Advanced Placement Courses Student Name: LastFirstMI ID #:Grade:_________Campus:____________ The student requests placement in the following Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) course(s): __________________________________________________________________________________ The student and parent/guardian understand and agree to the following: 1. The student may only voluntarily withdraw from a course between the 16th day of the semester to the last day of the 2nd six weeks for either a one-semester or two-semester class. A student may also exit after completing the end of the first semester course. To exit an AP or Pre-AP course within the designated time window, students must have completed the following steps: * Attend a minimum of 3 documented tutorial sessions * Attend a documented student/parent/teacher conference that includes the parent and teacher signatures on the exit form. The exit form must be submitted to the counselor’s office for consideration by the AP Steering Committee. 2. The student must have an 80 average in each Pre-AP course at the end of the first semester to automatically continue in that Pre-AP course for the second semester. If the student does not have an 80 average, the campus principal may consider extenuating circumstances and allow the student to continue in the course for the second semester on a probationary status. (EXCEPTION: See criteria for Algebra I 8 th grade in #3). 3. Students enrolled in Algebra I in the 8 th grade must maintain at least an 80 average to remain in the class. If a student’s grade falls below 80 during both the first and second six weeks, the student will be removed from the course. If a student’s grade falls below 80 at the end of the semester, it is strongly advised that the student exit from the course. 4. The Pre-AP courses are rigorous and have high expectations. Parents and students should consider the course load when registering for classes. Students taking Pre-AP ELA and Social Studies courses will be required to participate in an AP Summer Reading Program assignment, which will be posted on the MISD website. Grade Point Averaging Entering Freshman Class of and Beyond GRADE CORE ENHANCED/PRE-AP/AP PLEASE NOTE: Enhanced grade points are forfeited if a student is removed from an Enhanced (B/T or Pre AP, AP) course before the completion of the semester. The student will receive grade points for the course to which the student is assigned on.

What classes do I need to take in high school? Your first step is deciding what Endorsement plan you want to follow. Your Endorsement plan determines what Program of Study you need for graduation. Every student is on the Foundation Plan. Students can earn a distinguished level of achievement. This level of achievement is required to be considered for the top 10% for College Admission. Performance acknowledgements can also be achieved. Work with your High School Counselor to learn how your student can earn these acknowledgements..

CREDITS! You need 26 credits to graduate, 22 foundation courses plus four (4) electives in an endorsement. There are some classes in junior high that will give you high school credit. Starting in 9 th grade, you get a credit for EVERY class you take. Receiving a credit is based on two things: 1. A grade of 70 or higher 2. Your attendance ~ you must attend 90% of the time each semester. If you take a class and are not awarded a credit, the only way to get that credit is to RETAKE the class.
